I'm Dan, a recent graduate of UC Berkeley in History (High Honors, Phi Beta Kappa), excited to begin a second career in education. In addition to a long career in high-tech, I have excellent experience working as a volunteer and professionally with youth as a coach, mentor, physical education instructor and outdoor leader. I am excited to combine this experience with my love of learning and academic interests. I strive to engage with and motivate my students. I will meet you where you are and work with you to come up with ways meet your short-term, as well as long-term, educational goals.

I bring a wealth of academic, as well as real-world experience to my teaching. I consider myself to be a careful and empathetic listener. I strive to meet people on their own terms, understand their situation and then work with them to come up with solutions that meet their needs. Not everyone learns the same way and an important part of the work I do is to collaborate with the student on developing a winning strategy at the beginning of an engagement and then working the plan to methodically achieve the student's goals and objectives.

I have an excellent academic record and seek to provide my students with the the same tools I used in school to power their own work. I have an excellent command of English grammar and syntax. I combine that with a sophisticated, yet clear, communications style to produce well worked, thoughtful and compelling prose. At Berkeley I developed excellent reading skills, often being required to read hundreds of pages each day. The speed reading skills I acquired are teachable and will make any students academic life easier and more productive. Strategies for understanding, assimilating and organizing information have to be combined with an ability to synthesize that information and communicate it clearly. I did this by combining my skills with grammar and syntax with a love of English that inspired me to communicate elegantly as well as efficiently. English is a rich, but very challenging languag

Reading,

Reading

I was already a strong reader when I started my undergraduate studies. However, my professors encouraged me to learn how to speed read and as a result I was often able to complete reading assignments of hundreds of pages in a day. Speed reading has the potential not only to increase the amount a student can read, but also improves reading comprehension. I integrate speed reading into my tutoring and recommend it for all ambitious students looking to improve their academic performance.

English

English,

English

I have excellent verbal and written English skills which contributed to my attainment of high honors (equivalent to magna cum laude) and induction into the Phi Beta Kappa society when I graduated from UC Berkeley in the Spring of 2020. I enjoy meeting my students where they are with their English skills and to help them build on their strengths and address any challenges they face. I also teach students how to read more efficiently and deeply and summarize their thoughts to produce high quality written assignments in their classes.
Literature,

Literature

My attainment of high honors and induction into Phi Beta Kappa was, to a great extent, a function of my ability to closely read and analyze my course materials. I love literature and language and can consistently identify subtle themes, as well as make careful observations, that uncover an author's perspective and intent, even when partially hidden. I love to teach students how to closely read texts and to craft compelling arguments which form the basis of assignment responses that teachers value and reward.

As a history student at Berkeley my achievement of high honors and induction into the Phi Beta Kappa Society was for the most part a function of my writing abilities. I possess excellent grammar, syntactic and vocabulary skills, which I combine with very strong close reading and analytic skills, to help my students produce well thought out, well constructed essays, literature reviews, and analytic and research papers.

Test Preparation

CBEST

CBEST

In September I passed the CBEST easily on the first try. I can help you prepare for the test, evaluate what subject areas you might need to prep. One thing that you can't get from online tools and prep guides is focused help with the free written responses, I have excellent writing skills and can work with you to ace that portion of the test. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I will work with you to develop a winning strategy to manage the test itself.

Great Educator

He’s been very good On both subject matter and teaching my 15-year-old son how to better organize his time and become a better analytical writer across all subjects

Teddy, 2 lessons with Dan

Outstanding

Dan was able to break through my singular view of the problem and explain several options to move forward. He REALLY cared about helping me get to a better place in this class. He was more helpful in the first hour than some instructors are all semester.

An amazing teacher!

When I signed up on this website i was worried about the quality of the teaching. Dan's approach removed all my concerns. Rather than just cram a lot of test problems into each lesson he carefully designs each lesson to address the specific information I need to pass my teaching credentials exams. He diagnoses my weaknesses and revises lesson plans promptly. American History and writing are the areas I need to work on. Dan assigns specific homework and provides an amazing depth of knowledge when we meet. During the session I feel that each minute is well spent. If you are seeking quality tutoring, Dan is a great choice! His deep subject knowledge and solid teaching skills will help you succeed!

Great feedback!

Dan was extremely helpful during my son's session. He provided many insights and helped him think about ways to better express his arguments for his AP class assignments. Will definitely be meeting with him again soon!
