About Tushar

Hello! I am a third year undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, as well as a minor in Public Policy. I began tutoring as a high school student to help finance my education, and along the way discovered that I truly enjoy connecting with my peers and students, and facilitating a deeper understanding of concepts and material. While studying overseas in New Delhi, India, I established a copywriting and editing service to help my classmates work through the essays and coursework we were assigned. This focused largely on the skills required to analyze literature, examining everything from literary devices to style, tone, and organization of prose and poetry. I also helped students hone their written English skills, working from start to finish to craft a thesis statement, structure each piece, and cite and format the finished product.

When I returned to the United States, I also started tutoring students looking to improve their mathematics skills; I have continued this through all my semesters in college, and have worked with students of all ages and proficiencies - from those entering middle school to upperclassmen in high school. I also have worked on a case-by-case basis with students who have IEPs, special education needs, and alternative curricula. Over the past two years, I've developed a program to guide rising high school seniors through the college application process, which includes intensive standardized test prep (ACT/SAT I/II) as well as essay writing.

To me, the most meaningful part of the tutoring process is without a doubt, watching concepts click for a student. The optimism and self-confidence that students find within themselves as they apply what they learn is invaluable. I hope to be able to help you learn, think, and grow. Please feel free to reach out to schedule an introductory session!

For students local to the IL area, I was in many of the Accelerated/PA math programs from Elementary through middle school, and am comfortable working with Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2/Trig, and Precalc. For international students, I have also completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, (IBDP) and graduated as Valedictorian of my class, with a score of 40/45, and a 6/7 in Math.

English has always been my favorite subject, bar none. I found myself reading and writing long before I learned to love my other subjects in school, and my work has been featured in publications throughout my high school career. As a student at UC Berkeley, I have worked extensively to tutor high school and college students, whether they are applying to colleges, working on academic coursework, or looking to do more advanced writing, such as thesis work, graduate school applications, etc.

Relevant high school / IBDP grades I earned include:
Higher Level English Score: 7/7
Perfect scores on Theory of Knowledge essays, as well as the 4000 word Extended Essay
Reading and Writing SAT I scores: 800, 800.
Literature SAT II Subject Score: 780
Wyzant Writing Certification Test: 100%

I offer a free introductory session to get to know my students; this allows us to get to know each other, and also helps me work out individual, personalized strategies for success. I am also relatively flexible with my timings given advance notice, and am happy to schedule around your needs. Don't hesitate to get in touch!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Reading

I scored 800/800 on the SAT Reading/Writing. I was ranked 15th Internationally in the International English Olympiad Examination, as administered by the British Council.

Study Skills

I have worked extensively with past students to equip them with sound, effective study skills and habits, including: scheduling, deadlines, and time management, organizing papers, material, and schoolwork, test preparation, including chunking material, verbal and written memorization techniques, and practice methods. I also have experience working with students that require an IEP, 504, and/or other support and engagement with parents/teachers.

Writing

I have worked as a professional copywriter and copyeditor for a full-scale advertising agency.
I have also founded my own copyediting business, and have a diverse range of clients, from high school students, college applicants, current undergrads, internship/cover letter applicants, as well as those looking to apply to Masters or other graduate programs.
