About Brian

I've been living in China for the past six years teaching English, history, and literature at public university and high school. Most recently I was at South China Normal University in Guangzhou teaching English majors as well as U.S. history to a private high school on campus and TOEFL to adults privately. I am now back in California and looking for a satisfying job teaching ESL, history, or literature to foreign students.

I speak pretty fluent Mandarin, especially related to history, government, and politics. I've created hours' worth of history slideshows targeted towards Chinese students (complete with translations of difficult words). I also enjoy correcting foreign students' essays and commenting on the style and structure used. The English majors I taught in China complimented my attention to detail in both speaking and writing classes.

I can tailor my class to any preference. Whether you want to learn casual conversation English or intensive preparations for a standardized test such as TOEFL, I have the experience to accommodate your learning needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I taught SAT U.S. history at a UC-affiliated high school in China for two years. I maintained the students' enthusiasm and kept their interest piqued with slideshows, photos, discussions, music, videos, and games. I was able to cover pre-Columbus America all the way to the end of the Cold War in two semesters.

Chinese

Having lived in China for 6 years, studying at Humboldt State University for a year and a half, and having a Chinese wife, I feel I am competent enough to teach Mandarin Chinese to beginners. I also have a very good free dictionary/learning app that can be used on any Android to help with translation called Pleco. I have experience in both casual conversation with friends and political discussions in complete Mandarin.

English

I scored in the top 1% for reading on the SAT in high school. Afterwards, I earned a BA in English from Humboldt State University. Finally, I spent 6 years teaching English majors at Chinese university, where their English levels were extremely high.

ESL/ESOL

I have the Certificate for English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), which I earned at St. Giles International in San Francisco. This is the best ESL degree short of having a Master's. Using the techniques I learned there, I have been teaching ESL for 6 years in China, and I've been complimented on my attention to detail and interesting lesson topics.

Grammar

My most grammar-intensive English class outside of grade school was the CELTA degree, during which I attended grammar lessons and studied outside class for nearly eight hours per day. Afterwards, I learned how to better explain grammatical concepts on my own teaching ESL in China for six years.

IELTS

I have taught both IELTS and TOEFL when I lived in China, which are quite similar. I have learning apps to aid my lessons, and I like to recreate the pressure of the real test by recording and timing all oral answers. I also provide helpful vocabulary and alternative ways to structure answers.

Literature

I have always loved reading fiction, and I studied the academic classics when I was earning my BA in English. I also taught a course in literature at the University of Jinan in Shandong province, China, using slideshows, discussions, and videos. My favorite well-known books include Catch-22 and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Microsoft Excel

When I was teaching at university in China, I utilized spreadsheets to calculate my students' grades. Each semester I would have at least 300 students, so Excel was necessary. I can use the math functions and explain them in a simple manner.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been using PowerPoint since I started teaching 6 years ago. I make my slideshows clear, concise, and interesting. I even have a slideshow about how to make slideshows.

Proofreading

For six years, I have been correcting my students' papers in writing class. I have been complimented on my close attention to detail and helpful suggestions regarding the overall structure. I never miss a mistake and my notes are always clear.

SAT Reading

I taught SAT Reading briefly in China, and when I took the test myself in high school, I scored in the top 1%. I can give helpful suggestions for speed reading and scanning the text for answers.

TOEFL

I have taught both IELTS and TOEFL when I lived in China, which are quite similar. I have learning apps to aid my lessons, and I like to recreate the pressure of the real test by recording and timing all oral answers. I also provide helpful vocabulary and alternative ways to structure answers.

Visual Basic

A while ago I made an interactive fiction engine on Visual Basic, complete with a sentence parser like the original Colossal Cave game. Visual Basic is pretty easy to use, and I can teach both the language and the GUI.
