About Hannah

Hello! I am Hannah. I have been a college instructor for ten years. I love being in the classroom, but I love tutoring even more. I find it tutoring more rewarding for both the student and the instructor. Tutoring has allowed me to cater to every student's individual needs. I am quick at building rapport with my students. I challenge, encourage and support them and we both take pride in their advancement. Students can be already engaged in a writing project or can be at an elementary stage where we need to plan for interesting reading and fruitful writing exercises. I will help students at any grade level with reading and writing, a matter that is of prime importance to native speakers and foreign learners alike. I am especially good with non-native speakers since I have myself learnt English as a foreign language and mastered it at a high level so I can relate to learners' experience and challenges. I can teach for ESL/ESOL, TOEFL and ACT exams. Contact me to discuss lesson plans for how to read and write well, and to ENJOY the process of getting there. Hello! I am Hannah. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I am a native speaker of Arabic. I have taught it at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels at the University of California. I have also taught children and high schoolers. I can teach both standard and spoken Arabic.

English

I have been helping college students read and write better for the past ten years. It is an enjoyable and rewarding process. It all starts with getting the student interested in the subject they want to read/write about, and comes to an end with accuracy, elegance, and at times a little flourish. I have also tutored many students at various school levels.

ESL/ESOL

Having myself come to English from another language, I am highly attuned to the challenges facing non-native speakers. I have helped many learners of all ages, and believe that the key to success is a combination of some widely accepted methods with proven effectiveness and some personalized approaches that are tailored to the learner's preferences.

Grammar

Good grammar is the first step to writing and speaking well. I can help native speakers, as well as non-native learners, identify and (forever) eliminate their grammar errors. Good grammar can be your best friend. Speaking and writing correctly will always help you attain your professional as well as personal goals.

Reading

Reading well and enjoying it. This is my goal for every student. I welcome students who struggle with reading and those who think they don't like it. I design lesson plans that improve reading comprehension and lead to better writing. I test for these learning goals in fun and anxiety-free ways.

Writing

I have plenty of experience in helping students write well and get excited about it. Any any level, from first grade to graduate school, writing can be fun and exciting. My job is to help students do it well; accurately, effectively and with style.
