About Denise

I have an immense passion for teaching that sparked at an early age. My aspiration is to become an English professor. I am currently enrolled in the honors English program at UC Berkeley as a junior. As an English major with a Spanish minor I have tutored several students in all aspects of both languages including writing, literature, and linguistics.

I have an Associate's degree in Arts & Humanities from Oxnard College. I graduated from Oxnard College with high honors, and was recognized with an award as the outstanding English student of my graduating class. I fostered the role of President of the Gamma Epsilon chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta, a national English honor society.

I am accustomed to adapting to a variety of teaching methods including auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning. I will gladly adjust such techniques to meet my students needs in order to ensure a successful outcome of our tutoring sessions.

Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss specific lesson plans and availability unique to you. I look forward to assisting you in achieving your academic aspirations.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have tutored individuals of all ages for four years and counting in all aspects of the English language. My sophomore year in college I joined Sigma Kappa Delta, a national English honor society. I fostered the role of president for the 2015-16 academic year. I composed a presentation analyzing a novel as a part of my college's biannual Lecture Series that was posted on our community's local TV news page. I am a member of the English undergraduate association at UC Berkeley. I have a 4.0 GPA in my English major. I was recognized as the outstanding English student of my graduating class last spring from Oxnard College. I also have experience teaching English as a second language.

Grammar

As an English major with a special interest in writing, the use of proper grammar is particularly vital. In order to understand a language, one must first fathom its structure, or grammar. I have taken several composition courses in college that tend to the comprehension and application of correct grammar. Grammar is one of the more difficult components of a language to learn. Thus, in my lessons, I attempt to form connections with grammar points and general talking points, and I ensure my students focus on mastering one point at a time.

Proofreading

As an English major, I've taken a variety of composition courses. I revise papers regularly for students. Proofreading is a primary component of writing, which I am accustomed to doing plenty of.

Reading

As an English major I typically read on average two to three novels per week. I have tutored students with ADD in reading, and adults with rather low reading levels, as well as students from grade levels ranging from preschool to college. Depending on my student's reading level/age/interests I typically determine the level/content of our readings. I also set goals for my students accordingly, from short-term to long-term.

Spanish

As a native Spanish speaker, I learned Spanish and English simultaneously as a child. I took AP classes in the subject matter in high school, and I am currently a Spanish Literature minor at UC Berkeley. I have taught Spanish as a second language. I have taken advanced writing/reading courses in college, so I am able to tutor in all aspects of the Spanish language.

Writing

I am extremely passionate about writing. As a tutor, I have written and revised hundreds of papers as well as other various forms of writing. I have aided students in expanding and developing their minds as writers. I have won awards and I have been recognized for my personal writings in several ways, including scholarships.
