I hold a PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University. I have a lot of teaching experience, from lecturing in 300 student classes to one-on-one tutoring. I've taught children with reading problems in Holt Michigan, and taught English as a second language to children in Hong Kong, where I also worked as a private tutor. I have taught archaeology and anthropology classes at Columbia University in New York City and at Community College in Baltimore. In sum, I have taught a variety of subjects to different age groups and at different educational levels.

Strong test scores contributed to my acceptance to the PhD program at Columbia, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and insights with students who have ambitious goals for their future. Personally, I am a friendly family man with a young son.

I have experience tutoring High School and College-age students. Based largely on my SAT and ACT scores, I was a National Merit Semifinalist in High School, and received a scholarship to Albion College.

I am a published author, with two articles printed in scholarly journals in 2015. I have completed a PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University, an Ivy League institution. I scored in the 99th percentile for the Verbal section of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and received the highest possible score on the Analytic writing section. I have extensive experience working with university students.

Helpful and accommodating!

Really happy I chose John to help me with my Personal Statement for grad admissions. He was really able to point out the mistakes I have made within my essay and as well help me with the important parts I was missing. He made sure to answer all of my questions and concerns. I submitted my statement without fear of knowing it was not good or felt as if it was missing something. Thank you!!

An incredible writer and a tutor who really knows how to educate

John walked me through the brainstorming, writing, editing, and finalizing of my anthropology writing sample. He is very knowledgeable, organized, and good at teaching. He knows how to explain an anthropological perspective in a clear yet deep way. He always challenges me to think on a more sophisticated level. More importantly, with his help, I am able to step back, reflect upon my writing, and even become my own editor. Highly recommend to anyone who not only hopes to improve writing skills, but also hopes to enhance the ability of thinking reflexively, critically, and holistically.

Knowledgeable, efficient, and fun to work with. Highly reccommend!

I met with John for three online sessions, he helped me develop my personal statement for grad school. John is absolutely brilliant in his approach (and I have experience with other tutors): he is encouraging, efficient, eloquent, empathetic, has excellent communication and editing skills, makes difficult topics easy to understand and hard work fun. Great value on Wyzant!

Smart, Experienced and Kind

John gave me invaluable ideas for the Analytic Issue Essay. I already feel better equipped to handle it. I wish I had worked with him sooner before I took my first GRE.

Confidence and Strategy Booster

John M. helped me with each of the four sections on the ACT to make sure I was prepared for the upcoming test. He gave me some useful strategies that helped me increase my accuracy, and also taught me how to time myself. The stress of taking the ACT has been relieved a little bit, and I feel more prepared. He was super nice and helpful, and he made studying for the ACT more approachable.
