About Zhang Yi

I started tutoring back in 8th grade in high school because I was little bit ahead on math. By sophomore year, I was tutoring kids in biology, math, English, and French. Even if it wasn't my shift, I would hang out in the tutoring center in case there were kids who needed help with their homeworks. Honestly, I would say tutoring is more rewarding for myself than the students whom I helped. By having to constantly recall and present old information in a clear and concise manner, it provided a reinforcement mechanism that became a crucial foundation for the AP classes I was taking. I've seen kids who, in the beginning claimed that they were doomed to fail AP Bio, when in the end, they were not only able to get a 5 on the exam, but also started to take an interest in the subject. Seeing my tutees excel gave me a sense of accomplishment and pride that felt like my own. Thus, in the following years, I signed up to tutor in every subject right after I took them. By the end of senior year, I was a tutor in calculus, American history, European history, micro & macro economics, English, French, Chinese, biology, chemistry, physics... It felt great when students came into the tutoring center , without asking what subject they needed help in, get assigned to me.

Pride aside, tutoring became an essential motivation for me to do well in my classes even if stress started piling up. The thought that sometime in the future, I would need remember the material and explain it to someone else keeps me alert when I'm about to nod off in a bland lecture or when I'm about to wing a difficult problem on the homework. After my first year in college, I'd really like to put my knowledge to use while they are still fresh in my mind.

800 on SAT math, and 800 on SAT math subject test.

I am a molecular cell biology science major with a frantic love for biological science. For my sophomore year in high school, I took an anatomy summer course at Stanford and received an A in it. Before my freshmen year in college, I also spent my summer taking an human anatomy dissection course at Oxford University. I also passed Bio 1A and 1B at Berkeley with flying colors, which are the two classes with the lowest GPA in the entire university.

I am a native Chinese speaker. I went to school in China until I was 12. I also take passion in Chinese literature and ancient Chinese literature in my own spare time.

I studied French for 3 years in high school and 1 semester in college; I am intermediate in both reading and conversation.

I am a very easygoing and patient tutor, and especially passionate when it comes to biology and philosophy.

My hours are before 10:00 am and after 6:00 pm on Mon-Fri, and I am available at all hours on weekends.
Don't hesitate to message me if you have any questions about tutoring or life in general! ;)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I received a score of 5 on the AP bio exam.

Chinese

I was born in China and learned Chinese as my first language. Before coming to America for middle school, I received ten years of education in Chinese schools. I was also brought up in strictly non-accented Mandarin by my parents (whereas a lot of kids living outside Beijing speaks Mandarin with an accent). I speak with no accent at all. Aside from Mandarin, I also learned Cantonese from my father and Shanghainese from my mother. I also read Chinese literature profusely in my spare time and take a keen interest in ancient Chinese literature and poetry.

ESL/ESOL

I have seven years of English speaking experience in the US. And I tutored ESL kids in high school for 2 years.
