About Renee

I started teaching when I was still an undergraduate at the University of Washington. Helping other students understand the work we were all doing made my own learning deeper and a lot more fun. I started teaching in earnest as graduate student, leading biology labs and helping first year students learn to write at the college level. I was part of Cornell's John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Majors.

My teaching philosophy is to serve the student and serve the subject. Learning has to be tailored to each student's learning style and speed. At the same time, I want students to learn to appreciate the different subjects they study. All areas of knowledge are beautiful and interesting.

I hated math when I was in high school. I struggled a lot with it. When I was in college, I had a couple of great math instructors who opened my eyes to how math really worked (it's not memorization). The in graduate school I learned to love statistics. I have taught statistics at the college level and tutored graduate level stats students. However, It's my experience of struggling with the concepts that makes me a good tutor. I sympathize with a student's frustration and work to find ways for them to success.

Students feel overwhelmed by the mountain of details in biology. I help them find effective ways to study. More importantly, I help them make connections among the different things they're learning, so that it's not an undifferentiated mass of memorizing.

Ecology and evolutionary biology is my doctoral area. I have experience designing field experiments, creating curricula, and teaching in this discipline.

One of my goals in teaching writing is to reduce the fear factor and help student get their ideas on the page. I have taught writing to first year college students and tutored both middle and high school students. I believe that everyone can learn to write well, which doesn't just mean mechanically perfect. Everyone can learn to write in a voice that is expressive and effective, that is theirs alone.

Your learning will be my first priority. Contact me so we can figure out how,

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I worked with the John S. Knight Institute for writing at Cornell while in graduate school and developed the writer workshop program at CSUMB. I have developed curricula for both lab and lecture biology.
