About John

Hello! My name is John, and I am currently a freshman attending the University of California, at Berkeley. My intended major is Economics, and one of my hobbies is tutoring kids of all ages, from elementary to high school.

I have a combined tutoring experience of 6 years, starting from the 7th grade of middle school to my senior year of high school. Having this experience has given me a background in successfully working with different kids with personalities, and I thus have experience in being patient and communicative with children. I have found tutoring to be a fruitful and productive experience, and the entire reason why I tutor is because I enjoy seeing students' faces when they finally grasp a concept, build self-confidence in their academics, and then proceed to excel in a particular subject. Although I have experience tutoring a range of subjects, I believe my focal points are helping kids with Math, Mandarin, Standardized Tests such as the SAT and ACT, and college admissions.

As a student who just recently went through the trials and tribulations of high school and experienced the memories of middle school, I can certainly sympathize with all the students out there! School itself was no piece of cake, but with the help of a tutor, I believe that school not only becomes easy, but also enjoyable.

Aside from academics, I was involved in my high school's debate team, Constitution Team, Quiz Bowl, peer tutoring, and other organizations. Personally, my hobbies include playing chess, studying the stock market, playing golf, and working out.

I completed Algebra Honors in 7th grade, Geometry Honors in 8th grade, and Algebra 2 Honors, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus A, AP Calculus B, and AP Calculus C throughout high school. My composite ACT score was a 34, and I scored a perfect 36 on my math section. I also scored a 5 on my AP Calculus B/C exam.

I would love to get to know you (or your student, for all the parents out there) so please don't hesitate to shoot me a message! My hours are flexible as I can schedule around my own class times, and I can arrange sessions throughout the weekdays and weekends, and I do not mind having lessons very late at night (11 PM to 3 AM) because I know students may procrastinate :P. Although meeting face to face is an option, I very much strongly prefer online lessons because traveling is time consuming and a big hassle for a college student like me. Please don't hesitate to contact me!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I finished Algebra Honors in my 7th grade (getting all A's), and I have retained a strong background in Algebra and Mathematics ever since. Throughout my time as a high school tutor, I would often tutor students who were having trouble grasping Algebra concepts.

My tutoring method is to break the problem down into small, understandable steps and guide the student, rather than do the problem for the student.
