Amherst College (Philosophy)
I have been tutoring high school students for four years and love seeing my students succeed. My approach to tutoring is to teach my students how to learn and problem-solve for themselves, which not only helps them produce better work but prepares them to be successful life-long learners. While I am an easy-going, friendly tutor, I am very committed to my students and my main goal is to help them advance.
Some details about me: I graduated from Amherst College with a 3.79 GPA and earned a 2330 on my SATs. I can help students with SAT prep, English, geometry, trigonometry, algebra 1, French, and Latin. I find that I am especially successful helping students with reading and writing assignments.
In college, I tutored extremely bright students of color who came from underserved schools and were transferred to an excellent public school. Watching the students transform both their work and their self-confidence was one of the most gratifying and moving experiences of my life. I become personally invested in my students' success, both academically and personally — for me, there's nothing better then seeing how far I've been able to help a student come.
I have a keen sense of the English language and have spent most of my college career learning to write precisely and eloquently. I can pick out the parts of a student's work where the argument fails or is unclear and can help guide students to improve their own work. I am also skilled at helping students figure out for themselves what to look for in a passage to understand it more clearly, which is very useful in preparing for the SAT reading sections.
I look forward to working with you or with your child! If you think we would be a good fit, please reach out with any questions or to schedule our first session. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
