About Janet

I've tutored on and off throughout my life, beginning in college, and I always seem to come back to it. I've tutored calculus, writing, elementary reading, middle school math, and French. When I was a 6th-grade teacher, I got a lot out of working with students one on one because I was able to tailor my instruction directly to the student's need. I'm now turning my focus to algebra readiness and to writing and English literature.

I love to tutor math because I love math, especially algebra. I've also thought about it quite a bit--what makes it hard to understand, tools that help students grasp essential ideas, and connections that help me expand my algebra teaching repertoire.

I also love to tutor English and writing. I have a degree in English Literature from Stanford University and I have a Master's degree from U.C. Berkeley in Comparative Literature. I've worked professionally as a writer for many years--in a few different fields--and I firmly believe that strong, confident writing is a skill that everybody needs, not just those writing professionally. I've taught writing and composition at the college level, and I've tutored young writers. For me, the payoff of working with a student comes when the person finds his or her own writing voice.

Please contact me if you are looking for a caring tutor in the Berkeley area. I look forward to speaking with you about my skills and experience and about your needs as a student (or parent of a student).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Let x equal the joy of learning! I'm a former middle school math and science teacher who loves working with young people one-on-one. My favorite subject to tutor is Algebra, because I enjoy helping students improve their understanding of math concepts and gain new skills.

English

I have a degree in English Literature from Stanford University and an advanced degree from U.C. Berkeley. I've taught writing and composition at the college level, and I've tutored young writers.

Literature

Classic literature presents opportunities for deep learning--and enjoyment. I enjoy working with students to help them engage with stories and books. I have a master's degree in Comparative Literature and a bachelor's degree in English Literature, and I have experience giving lessons in both these subjects.

Prealgebra

I've always loved algebra, and I find joy in helping young people connect with the important concepts of prealgebra. I'm a former middle school teacher, where I taught 6th grade math and science. Much of middle-school math involves ratio and proportion--and mastering these ideas is essential for real-world math as well as for algebra and other math topics.

Writing

I have a degree in English Literature from Stanford University. I've worked professionally as a writer for many years--in a few different fields--and I firmly believe that strong, confident writing is a skill that everybody needs, not just those writing professionally. Very thankful

Our 8th grade son is a reluctant student but he has been surprisingly willing and cooperative about going to see Janet every week to work on pre-algebra topics. And he prepares for his sessions with her! He thinks about what he would like to work on in advance whether it be homework or reviewing concepts that are confusing to him. And Janet has provided us and him with really helpful feedback.
