About Fatima

I began my education studying civil engineering, then settled on Conservation and Resource Studies at UC Berkeley. Finally settled on a major, I had already completed a slew of courses in engineering, earth sciences, physical and social sciences, math, humanities, and the arts. This is what allows me to be a very versatile tutor.

Alongside my own coursework experience, I have 6+ years of tutoring experience.

I began tutoring during my junior year of high school, assisting underclassmen in writing, literature, and composition. I edited dozens of papers for any student that came to our tutoring center, sometimes reading 10-20 page papers and making content, grammatical, and structural suggestions. I would take each paper on Friday and return it on Monday, then have about an hour-long session discussing the editing suggestions. I believe that the most important aspects of writing are organization and tone.

I also had the opportunity to tutor during my first few years of college while competing for the Speech & Debate Team. I assisted new-comers to the team with their research, and watched them grow their ability to confidently articulate themselves. I held sessions of varying length (30 min-2 hrs), during which we perfected the structural, content and presentational aspects of Comm class assignments. I also guided students through writing speeches, corresponding papers, and completing research goals as per their classes using various tools—scholarly search engines, library, etc. After coaching a high school debate team this past academic year, I am now the director of debate at Campolindo High school.

I once taught a uniquely inspiring Comm student who suffered from mild Tourettes Syndrome. His dedication was only rivaled by the difficulty he had giving speeches in front of crowd. It was incredibly rewarding to help said student overcome his reservations about research, writing and public speaking. Helping this student gave me my most rewarding experience as a tutor.

While in college, I also began volunteering for an independent study group which helped students from my high school. I taught geography, geology, environmental science, and intro chemistry during this time. On the first appointment, we worked through the students’ homework assignments, which were brought to lessons, and left a portion of the work for the next lesson or chapter unfinished. This served as a way of assessing where the student stood in their understanding of the material from the start. The unfinished problems would then be completed on the student’s own time, and brought back for correction and any necessary re-working. Afterwards, we reviewed a new lesson and started on the HW assignments.

Before exams, our tutoring sessions consisted solely of practice problems/tutor-administered quizzes and review time, during which any questions could be answered. These were my favorite sessions, because they allowed students to demonstrate the new skills we had worked on during the entire semester.

As a quick aside, I scored well on my junior year (2011) SAT and would love to pass on a few tips and tricks to my students for fast reading comprehension. I will also happily apply the same “assess-correction-review-quiz” system to any SAT preparation material students of mine wish to master. Please see the "subjects" portion for a more in-depth look at the topics I teach.

Some of my extraneous interests include gardening, all forms of art, yoga, visiting the beach, reading, and trying new foods (unfortunately, I cannot accept any payment in the form of food, as much as I would like to).

I once struggled with realizing my full potential in school, and I understand that education can be frustrating. However, I would love to help students in realizing their full potential and developing the intellectual confidence which is central to their success.
Please feel free to contact me for help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am certified to teach math topics until Trigonometry. I have had around a half dozen math students, and most recently guided a high school junior through the second half of his Trigonometry course. I require that student's textbooks be provided (I cannot buy textbooks online in order to conduct lessons) so that our sessions will be most relevant to the coursework that students will be expected to know for tests--although I am happy to draft practice quizzes and lessons based on the textbooks provided in order to expand content application.

Drawing

I have always had a very strong passion for art, and that interest has manifested itself into many of my endeavors as a young adult. I created and donated three pieces of artwork to be auctioned off at Artistic Beats, a fundraiser hosted at UC Irvine aimed to benefit victims of domestic abuse in 2010. I was a staff artist for my high school's newspaper, and contributed many hand-drawn/painted spreads for the publication. I was awarded the City of Villa Park Award, in recognition of participation in Guggenheim Art Exhibit at Chapman University in 2008. Furthermore, I served as Artistic Director and head of murals creation in my high school's student council for two years. I completed AP Art Studio in my senior year, as well as both college courses 2-D Design and Color and Advanced Drawing with A+'s. I think that art is as personal as a diary, and evaluating it as a tutor/teacher is not always objective or easy. However, teaching basic tips for choosing brush size, graphite thickness, pressure application and blending techniques can aid the technical aspects of a work of art.

Geometry

I am certified to teach all math topics up until advanced Trigonometry. This includes Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry and Trigonometry (which oftentimes incorporates principles from Pre-Calculus). I have had around a half dozen math students, and most recently guided a high school junior through the second half of his Trigonometry course. I require that student's textbooks are provided (I cannot buy textbooks online in order to conduct lessons) so that sessions may be aimed solely at content most relevant to what students be expected to know for tests--although I am happy to draft practice quizzes and lessons based on the textbooks provided in order to expand content application. I try to avoid theoretical math lessons (unless they are called for) and will likely use most of our time working on practice problems and examples together to solidify the students' understanding of various concepts.

Public Speaking

I am a four-time national Phi Rho Pi champion in speech and debate. I have competed on the CA state, US national and international level (at a tournament hosted by X'ian International Studies University in China) on behalf of my college's speech and debate team. I went undefeated in parliamentary debate with my partner at nationals this year and was also awarded the 4th Place Bovaro Award, which is given to the single student who earns the most points for their university at nationals. I was awarded a $3,000 scholarship from Pt. Loma Nazarene University for being crowned the best debater and individual events speaker at a tournament, which featured 41 universities/colleges from around the nation. I have almost 3 years of experience on the team and have become an elder advisor for new students, coaching them through limited preparation speaking events like the ones I have dominated at a national level. These skills involve quick research skills, effective content, seamless structure, inviting and controlled body language and speaking tone, and flawless timing. I will make a lean, mean, speaking machine out of any student I am given the honor of working with.
