About Elena

I'm currently a student at UC Berkeley, working towards a Cognitive Science/Computer Science double and enjoy singing, dancing and playing the violin. I'm fine working with very young to high school aged kids and am fine around pets. I have lots of experience tutoring all ages and ethnicities in Math, Science, English, Writing and Social Studies. I am currently the Logistics Director for an on campus non-profit after school mentoring/tutoring program, NOVA, and have worked as a peer mentor and tutor for grades 1-12.

I really love tutoring because I feel it's a very valuable experience and excelled in areas of schooling I otherwise did not think I would because of the help of a tutor. I also really enjoy meeting kids and believe an important part of tutoring is making them feel valued and not like they are any less intelligent for not understanding something the first time.

During the school year I tutor kids from 1st-8th grade in math, and during high school I worked as a peer mentor and tutored other high school students in both Algebra and Geometry (courses I received A's in).

Spanish was my first language, and I have taken college level Spanish 1, 2 and 3 (and received A's). I used to go down to Mexico on Medical Missions trips during my middle school and early high school years and act as a translator for the pharmacist.

My friend and I are available as a package deal to cover all aspects of the SAT (math, reading and writing) for those who wish to improve their score.

I passed out of all required writing classes in UC Berkeley because I received 5's on both AP Literature and AP Composition tests (as well as A's in the class). However, I continued to take a Rhetoric and Music essay course, because I enjoy writing, and received A's in both. In high school I assisted a lot with peer review and essay tutoring and have worked with lots of ages on improving their writing. I was also an English TA in high school.

Please feel free to contact me as I'm pretty flexible about hours and rates and love to get to know and help new people.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Science

I've taken comprehension Computer Science classes that are project and theory based. Aforementioned courses covered languages such as Python, Scheme, SQL, Java, C, and more. I received not only passing, but above average grades in all these classes and feel very comfortable teaching the material from them. Especially because I also serve as an on campus tutor for some of these classes.

Python

I'm a student at UC Berkeley and have taken CS61a which is a rigorous course taught in Python. In addition, I've also served as a lab assistant and am currently taking another class taught in Python that requires us to have a firm grasp of the language.

Violin

I have played the violin for about 10 years, and been in orchestra from 7th-12th grade. During my last three years in high school I served as a violin tutor for the kids in our orchestra who were just learning to play. I took violin lessons and learned to play under the Suzuki method and still have the books. I prefer to tutor children with the basics first and then help them with pieces they can play and their intonation and form.

Good Tutor for Object Oriented Programming in Java

Patient, very helpful, cleared up a lot of my confusion. Answered my questions clearly and was not demeaning in the slightest(which is my biggest fear when asking questions). Thank you.
