About Ken

I have taught English for most of my life: Benicia High School for 22 years, at three private schools (College Preparatory School, Carden School, Concordia High School)' and at UC Berkeley. At each venue, my students learned and then moved on to the next stage of their education. In my last year at Benicia, 41 of my 43 AP students passed the demanding AP examination, 30 of them with superior scores of 5 or 4. I have effectively taught struggling students, outstanding students and students of middling abilities and achievements. I like to teach and like even more seeing my students learn. To watch a student brighten up and become more of a confident, literate human being is one of the great treats life offers.

My way of teaching involves dialog and honesty. A real question is worth much more than a canned belief. Questioning activates our capacities to know and understand. Once a student actively and honestly engages his or or her intelligence, good things happen. Education become more than pro-forma. The skills needed to accomplish a task are readily sought and acquired. This might mean having the needed materials on hand, using higher order thinking skills, being a diligent proofreader, being charmed by a beautiful phrase or thought. Needs will vary with each student. Those needs can be responded to effectively. Coming up with an effective response is my obligation as an educator. It is an obligation I am happy to take on and meet.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I received my education at UC Berkeley and hold a MA in English and A.B. degrees in both English and Political Science. I also taught freshman English at Cal for four years. I get a kick out of seeing students becoming competent writers and thinkers. Get those skills down and doors start to open.
