My goal in working with students is to guide them to develop critical thinking skills and to organize for success. I want to help them build lifelong skills that they can use in school and in their life’s work.
I was inspired to return to tutoring after working with my third grade grandson—guiding him and encouraging him on his math homework. I tutored when I was a college student and later taught grades 7 through 12, primarily math and English classes. I also enjoy teaching elementary school students and have developed techniques that keep them engaged and eager in their studies as they gain ease and skill. I have studied the Common Core Curriculum in Mathematics that is now the standard for the state of California.
My own organization and attention skills were honed while I finished my Bachelor’s degree in Zoology at UC Berkeley as the single parent of two preschool sons. Since that time, in addition to classroom teaching, I have worked as a systems programmer, often teaching managers and executives the ins and outs of the operating systems I have developed.
I encourage and welcome feedback from parents and students. I want to work together with my students and their parents so the student will have a rewarding learning experience.
I look forward to hearing from you and working with you for success in your studies! My goal in working with students is to guide them to develop critical thinking skills and to organize for success. I want to help them build lifelong skills that they can use in school and in their life’s work.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored math at the elementary level both as a volunteer tutor in the Berkeley School District and as the parent and grandparent of elementary school children. I have studied the new Core requirements being used in the Berkeley School district. I also have been a certified classroom teacher in math in the Berkeley, Oakland, and San Ramon School Districts.
I have taken logic courses as an undergraduate at Loyola University in Chicago. As a database programmer, working in several programming languages, I have written code for logic trees innumerable times. I use syllogistic and philosophical logic when I teach math to students.
I have been doing needlework since I was a young child. I have taken many classes in various types of embroidery: crewel work, stump work, drawn thread embroidery. I have designed embroidery pieces and have an extensive library of books on embroidery technique and historical pieces.
I have worked as a database designer and programmer for over 30 years. I have written large financial reporting systems and transportation routing and pricing systems in Oracle SQL. I have studied Oracle, taken classes in Oracle programs, and worked as an Oracle programmer.
I have taken several semesters of photography classes at the California College of Arts, back when it was called the California College of Arts and Crafts. My bicycle racing photographs and portraits have been published in newspapers. My portrait photography has been included in juried shows.
I have been a USMaster's Club swimmer for over 20 years. I have been coached and gone to numerous swimming workshops in all strokes during that time. I have completed the course work for the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor class.
