During this difficult pandemic, I am teaching online, at a reduced rate, and am committed to helping you enjoy learning at home or in school. I am a former news reporter and grant writer with a B.A. cum laude in Classics from Harvard University. For almost 20 years, I have taught drama and creative writing for all ages in Bay Area public schools. I have also led workshops at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. I have done coursework in Teaching for Understanding with Harvard Graduate School of Education and in 2012 received a post baccalaureate Certificate in Writing from UC Berkeley. While working as
founding Artistic Director of an educational arts company, I edited 30 books of original poetry by students, and developed an award winning cross-disciplinary education program recognized for excellence by local civic organizations and the California Arts Council. In addition, I hold an English substitute teacher credential with the Oakland Unified School District. I received a perfect score in my English SAT exam and a top scores in grammar and writing in my CBEST exams (required for substitute credentialing).
My approach to teaching is based on years of experience teaching kindergarten children through senior citizens. I work with learners to find ways to make learning fun and interesting, to re-awaken natural curiosity. I have an in-depth knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and writing techniques: I use techniques practiced by the UC Berkeley English department for writing research essays, creative nonfiction or personal essays. I also teach how to analyze and interpret literature or poetry in ways that relate to real life. Most importantly, I work with students to "own" his or her learning, to understand the relevance of education both personally and professionally.

AMAZING!! / AWESOME!!
Susannah was EXTREMELY knowledgable. She clearly explained the "why" and even responded to questions afterwards. My son retained the information. We loved that Susannah cared about my son learning. She is FANTASTIC!Michelle, 2 lessons with Susannah

Susannah is the exceptional tutor! 11 out of 10!
Susannah is the exceptional tutor. I would say she is the best I've ever worked with. Susannah is very responsible and completes her work in time. She is also very patient. I am an ESL student and I am struggling a lot with English writing. Susannah taught me a lot about writing in general besides correcting my papers. I learned a lot from her about grammar, structure, and thesis construction. Susannah also helped me with my applications for grad schools. I regret that I haven't found her earlier. I bet I would be having A's in all my writing classes by now :) I highly recommend SusannahVlad, 8 lessons with Susannah
Highly skilled, knowledgeable and professional tutor.
Susannah assisted my son with summarizing a classic folk tale. She taught him how to interpret literature and important elements to observe in fiction text. She has an-in-depth knowledge of grammar and writing techniques. She also worked on public speaking and how to present during an interview with my son. Susannah implemented her acting skill which made the sessions fun and easy to understand.Elly, 5 lessons with Susannah
Great tutor on invitation letter leading up to grant proposal
Susannah taught me about how an invitation letter to a forum is not a fundraising letter or any such request. Although an invitation letter to a forum can certainly lead up to a fundraising request of some sort, it is separate and distinct in content and purpose from a fundraising letter. She taught me other things as well. We spoke about the next phase of the grant proposal, which involves a needs statement and that although a forum is about having those who are invited to the forum reflect upon your program's needs and how to come up with ways to better help those in need, all such related ideas and statements have to be implemented in program or project.Anthony, 1 lesson with Susannah
Engaging and Energetic
Susannah covered a lot of ground in a very short time on our first session. She moved quickly between topics, which made the lesson interesting and engaging for my high school age son, who probably could have thought of other activities he'd rather be doing in the summer. Most telling of all, my son wants to continue his lessons with Susannah.Wayne, 12 lessons with Susannah
Best Personal Statement Tutor!
Susannah helped me to revise my UC application's statement. She listened to me patiently and organized my thoughts clearly. At first, I did not know what I should write. However, she tried to understand who I am and I could come up with an idea of the essays. Also, since she was very friendly, I could easily share my personal challenges. She always made me reflect myself and I could write my statements that I am satisfied with. I highly recommend her! Overall, she is a really great tutor and I would like to work with her in the future.Rikako, 4 lessons with Susannah
She is clever. She knows what to do....
She thought me how to organize my essay using an outline. She seems like very friendly. The only comment that i have she suppose to listen to students if they asked frequently questions . Have eye contact if she speak. Other than that she is very good tutor I admire her credential mostly in her writing skills.Katherine, 1 lesson with Susannah
Medical School Personal Statement Coach!
Susannah significantly helped me develop my personal statement for medical school. She responds quickly to messages and really has a way with helping her students articulate their personal reflection. I had a rough draft when I first met with her. During our two sessions together, her friendly and compassionate nature made it easy for me to share my personal tragedies and drive to become a physician. I highly recommend her. She is extremely efficient and her guidance through this difficult process was invaluable. Thank you so much!Tony, 3 lessons with Susannah
10 of 10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Susannah helped me revise my UC waitlist statements. I needed help including all my ideas for the statement within a 200 word limit, fleshing out my thoughts to make them come across more clearly, and organizing my thoughts in a way that made my statements flow well. First of all, Susannah is a tutor that responds very quickly to her messages. It made things easier because I was able to be in constant contact with her through Wyzant and this speedy communication relieved some of my stress because of the statement deadlines. It also only took one session, for each statement, for Susannah to help me finalize the statements. I appreciate how she helped me revise my words and was able to maintain my voice within the statement. After revising, she helped me cut out a few words or rearrange ideas so that my statement followed the word limit requirement. She is patient and works well with the student to ensure that the student's voice is present in their work. Overall, Susannah is an excellent writing tutor and I would work with her again in the future.Aubrey, 2 lessons with Susannah
