About Sarah

I have been a teacher or tutor in some capacity for as long as I can remember. From my early experiences with Kumon Math and Reading as a math and reading instructor during my high school days, to my college years as a Spanish, math and biology tutor, to my most recent experience as a high school geometry and earth science teacher, I have loved working with students and shaping young minds.

I tutored for three years through Kumon Math and Reading, establishing long-lasting relationships with students of all ages and backgrounds, from ages 4 to 16. There, I worked most critically in fostering independent learning in students so they could attain high levels of reading comprehension and math ability. As well, during my high school years, I often volunteered as a Spanish tutor for my fellow classmates. During my college years, I worked long-term with a high school student in Algebra I and Algebra II content as well as biology.

Most recently, I have completed my first year of teaching at a charter school in downtown Oakland. Not only have I been responsible for over 70 students in two subjects, but I have also been responsible for managing many aspects of a homeroom. I love to engage my students in as many aspects of math and science as possible, tying in as many elements of our lives as possible into my lessons. I love and live for seeing my students posing their own thoughtful questions about the world around them. I believe in direct instruction; however, I also believe in giving students the tools to control and drive their own learning.

Beyond teaching, in my numerous leadership and extracurricular roles, I have been a mentor, a counselor, a group leader, and a motivator. I firmly believe that all children can learn, especially when they are working with the right educator in the right circumstances. I look forward to working with your child!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am a high school Algebra teacher and have taught the subject for the last two years. I am also actively involved in curriculum design for our district's use of shared curricula that is more common core aligned. I love the subject and I love finding ways to make Algebra more interesting, from using manipulative objects (such as Algebra tiles) to making review games to help students engage with practice.

Geometry

I have 3 years of experience teaching high school geometry in a school setting (September 2012-now) and5 weeks of teaching an accelerated summer school course of 1 semester of Geometry (June 2012-July 2012).

Public Speaking

My career in public speaking began 9 years ago in high school, where I competed extensively in Speech and Debate. My event entailed writing my own speech, memorizing it, and delivering it at every competition. I was judged on the content of my speech, as well as my style and presentation. I earned numerous accolades, and I was ranked 10th in the state of Ohio. I continued my public speaking career in college, where I participated in Parliamentary Debate, as well as Model United Nations. I am now the acting debate adviser for my high school's Debate Club.

Spanish

I have 9 years of Spanish classes, and I have tutored in Spanish for at least 4 of those years. My minor when graduating from the University of Pennsylvania was Hispanic Studies, and I have traveled to countries such as Argentina and Spain.
