University of Southern California (English Literature)
UC Berkeley - Boalt Hall School of Law (J.D.)
I am currently a second-year student at Berkeley Law and a recent alumna of the University of Southern California, where I graduated summa cum laude with a major in English Literature and minors in Spanish & Psychology. At USC, I gained teaching experience as a volunteer teacher and as a tutor for student athletes.
I have always had a passion for languages and aim to infuse that same enthusiasm in my students! I especially love to work with students in improving close-reading, analysis, and writing skills, which are applicable to every major and necessary for success at the university level. While most people dread the prospect of beginning an essay, I can make the process less daunting by providing you with the tools to create a strong foundation for your writing. These include developing a coherent thesis, structurally outlining your points of argument, and contributing original and insightful analysis. I can also aide you in the stages of proofreading and work with you to correct grammatical errors, identify logical inconsistencies, and strengthen the persuasiveness and flow of your argument.
I also can provide support for test-prep, college application counseling, resume writing, and general organizational study skills.
I am accustomed to working with students with a wide-range of strengths and personal preferences. By drawing from my varied experience as a tutor, I tailor my teaching style to your needs and ensure that our time together is engaging and productive! Melinda is very knowledgeable and extremely helpful with assisting my son revising and refining his essays for his AP English Language class. I believe he has a much better understanding of his writing assignments because of her input, which has been valuable.
Melinda is a tremendous help to my student. She is patient and very helpful. My student has more confidence as she goes along on her Spanish II class. Melinda is always on time and very courteous.
Melinda did an excellent job of creating a relationship with my daughter while at the same time assessing her Spanish skills and capabilities. The first meeting is always tough because it's unfamiliar and takes time to build. It was my daughter's first experience with a tutor and was a bit nervous. But Melinda was extremely approachable and connected with her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have provided college counseling services during my time at USC, particularly in terms of helping students with admission essays. I help students with brainstorming potential topics for personal statements to best showcase their strengths. I also help proofread essays for grammatical errors and overall flow. I've applied and been accepted to numerous colleges graduate schools, so I am very familiar with the application process.
Growing up with a mother who teaches Spanish at the middle school level, I had an early introduction to the Spanish language. In high school, I passed both the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature exams and continued my studies at USC by pursuing a minor in Spanish.
I graduated summa cum laude from USC with a degree in English. At USC, I tutored student athletes in freshman writing to help them understand the process involved in composing an essay. I would particularly focus on pre-writing exercises to teach them the importance of creating a coherent outline with credible sources before they began writing.
