UC Santa Barbara (PhD)
Are you looking for someone who can explain science in the clearest terms possible? I've been teaching and tutoring math and science for 20 years. I've taught students from 16 to over 40, with learning disabilities, just learning English as a second language, and both science and non-science majors. I've taught at the University level at Utah State University for two years, and as a teaching assistant at UC Santa Barbara for eight years. I love transforming difficult concepts into simple statements, and working with students at all levels to reach an understanding of the material. If you want to learn a little more about my approach, please read my five teaching tenets.
My education: BA in Environmental Sciences, Minor in Geology UC Berkeley
M.S. and Ph.D. in Physical Geography from UC Santa Barbara
I use five guiding tenets to teach:
Engagement: I provide a range of formal and informal activities to create opportunities for students to ask questions and demonstrate their knowledge.
Fairness and Consistency: This is especially important to me because inconsistency in expectations and grading can be demoralizing to students. In my experience, students will try harder if they feel that there is a realistic goal that they can achieve by working hard.
Flexibility: I recognize that some students have heavy responsibilities outside of their coursework. If that is made clear to me I will go out of my way to help them reach their goal in the class. It is difficult to balance flexibility with fairness, but I believe very strongly in recognizing the individuality of each student and the choices they have to make.
Dedication: I both give and expect dedication. I hold students to high standards and provide them with the tools to reach those expectations. Dedication to my students gives them confidence, which is something I work hard to impart. I
Enthusiasm: In teaching evaluations, my students have repeatedly commented that I exude enthusiasm for the subject matter. This passion is infectious and makes learning an enjoyable and exciting process, helping students to learn by making it relevant, meaningful, and memorable. I also use humor quite a bit in order to help students remember the lesson and to create a less intimidating and hierarchical learning environment. Hello!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
