In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My music degrees from SFSU include proficiency in sight singing and ear training, and I have taught these to all age groups for many years as part of a private music lesson curriculum.
I train my students to listen to the various aspects of a piece of music by focusing on one aspect at a time. Understanding pitch and hearing differences in pitch are crucial for ear training, as feeling the beat of the music and counting are crucial to rhythm training. My students learn intervals by singing and by playing them on the piano and/or on their instrument. I give musical dictation to test their understanding of pitch, duration and rhythm.
I have performed on French horn at the college level, and I continue to play the horn so that I can teach it proficiently. I understand the beast, and can give a deep understanding of it to my students, starting with simple ways to determine what note the student is playing and how it relates to the other notes on the instrument. I also love the sound of the French horn, and give my advanced students solos from the orchestral repertoire to learn, along with movements of Mozart concertos and selections from the major etude books.
With a music education degree from SFSU and many years of private music teaching experience, I am proficient at teaching general music and music appreciation to all ages as part of my music lesson curriculum.
I have a deep knowledge and appreciation for the music of many styles and cultures, and I love to impart that knowledge and appreciation to my students.
When we study a piece of music, we also study its historical context, what the music is about, and why it is important. We learn how the lyrics of a song fit the tune, and how the composer's choice of melody and chords highlights the meaning of the music. We study the shape of the melodic line and the form of the piece, to learn how line and form help express the music.
I teach music theory basics for beginners, through more complex concepts for advanced students. I also incorporate music theory education in my instrumental lessons, so that my brass students can understand the mechanics of the music they are learning. For beginners, we learn how to read notes and name them, identify and name all the common musical symbols, including sharps and flats, and simple scales. We then tackle the circle of fifths, keys and key signatures, along with the scales for those keys, and different time signatures, meters, and rhythms. I have my students write their own music at every level of learning, including simple counterpoint when they are ready. Chords, chord structure, inversions, superimpositions, jazz chords and chord progressions are introduced when the student is ready. There are always listening assignments as well.
I play trombone professionally in certain groups, along with trumpet, so I understand how the trombone works and how to make it sound its best. I teach beginner through advanced level trombone. I give my trombone students tips on breathing, breath support, embouchure, alternate slide positions, and adjusting their slide positions when necessary to get notes perfectly in tune. My trombone students typically excel in their studies; I often receive great reviews from their parents and their school music directors. I also love the sound of a trombone!
I have played trumpet and cornet professionally for four decades, and have taught them for more than three decades. I understand how the trumpet and cornet work, and how to make them sound their best. I teach beginner through professional level. I teach all my students correct breathing & breath support techniques, correct embouchure and fingering, and how to play in tune. My trumpet and cornet students typically excel in their studies; I often get great reviews from their parents and their school music directors. I also love the sound of trumpet and cornet; I play both instruments professionally in the Golden Gate Park Band and in several other groups including my own brass quintet and brass band.
