Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught and tutored children and adults for decades. Just after getting my Bachelor's degrees in English and German (with an ESL certificate), I took a winter job as a ski school instructor for children aged 5 and up. That was while waiting for my first professional teaching position (with children) as a Peace Corps English teacher in a small elementary school in Rwanda. I then gained my Masters in language education with a thorough background in language and literacy development and teaching both for native and non-native students. While I later occupied positions in post-secondary colleges in the US and abroad, many of my students were studying to become elementary-level language teachers themselves. My most recent teaching experience with children was as the language arts and science teacher at a small, residential treatment center for troubled youth aged 10-20.

Additional experience with children includes: 1) founding and leading an after school science education club for 7-12 year-olds; 2) organizing and leading a homeschool education program for my own children for approximately two years; 3) volunteer teaching as Junior Achievement visiting educator in a public elementary school; and 4) coaching pee-wee soccer.

I have always been able to establish excellent rapport with children (and adults), and am able to meet ALL students where they are at with methods and approaches that are appropriate for them individually.

ESL/ESOL

Greetings!

I love tutoring all levels and ages in English, ESL/ESOL, Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Note Taking, Critical Thinking, and Study Skills.

My first position tutoring English was at the American Language Institute on the campus of SDSU while studying for my Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and German and Minor in Linguistics. Most of my foreign language learning occurred as a study abroad student, so for all of you non-native speakers of English I know firsthand how it feels to learn a second language!

My next position was as a primary and secondary English teacher in the Peace Corps, which involved supplemental English tutoring after school. After that I returned to get a Masters Degree in English (SFSU) and eventually taught as a Professor of English for many years. During this time I taught:
- University English teachers in Egypt as a Fulbright Lecturer
- College and college-prep English Composition, ESL, and TOEFL test-preparation as an English Professor in Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the US (Bakersfield College-BC, California State University Bakersfield-CSUB, and community colleges in San Diego)
- 10th grade English Composition/Literature at a private girls high school
- K-8th Language Arts & Science at a residential treatment center for boys
- Privately as a professional tutor for children, teens, adults, and professionals throughout Bakersfield and Kern County

I am known for being friendly, efficient, accurate, and fun - all while ensuring progress and success for my students and clients. I’ll be your Private Professor!
