I have been a teacher, a trained librarian and a tutor for the past 20 years. My favorite subject to teach is Language Arts (reading, writing, speaking and listening). I can teach those areas from K-12th grades.
I am very interested in helping students of low ability improve their language skills, especially non English speakers. I am very familiar with several commercial reading programs, including Read Naturally (which is used all over America), Soar to Success, FastTrack, Cars and Stars, and Standards Plus. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken and passed the CBEST and I believe I am qualified to tutor someone who is trying to pass it.
I believe I am qualified to teach all current Elementary subjects. For the last 7 years I have taught multiple subjects in KCSOS Alternative Education. I have also passed the California CBEST and CSET and am able to train students for state testing.
I served as a Reading Intervention teacher for BCSD from 2005-2010. I passed the CBEST AND CSET in English. I currently work part time with special students in KCSOS. I am a published author, and a columnist for the Californian.
Although I don't have a degree in music, I studied music privately as a child and teenager and belonged to the National Guild of Amateur Pianists.
When I became an adult, I was selected as a pianist by several churches, and was also a pianist for an elementary school.
During the 1980' and 1990's, I had my own piano studio and taught around 40 students per year for 10 years. I sponsored two recitals for these students anually--one in the fall and one in the spring.
