About Michael

I'm the sort of person who gets stuck with all the work in "group" projects at school because my partners know I'll do a good job :). I've been a teacher of my classmates, friends, and family for as long as I can remember. At the early age of 5, I received the nickname Dr. Mike because I'd watch episodes of Dr. Phil and memorize the advice that he gave his guests. My family would ask me questions as if I was a psychologist or relationship expert. Some of the advice I gave was so hilariously articulate and beyond my years that ever since the nickname has stuck, and it seems I've been teaching people ever since.

Now a lot of time has passed and the teaching has always been accompanied by learning, lots of learning. My areas of expertise include: all manners of free-weights and Olympic weightlifting; English and writing (currently studying German, Japanese, and Swedish among other languages); and a Track and field throwing events (currently a coach, highly decorated shot-putter).

My degree in Exercise Science (Health Professions) is a great start, but I'm also an Olympic lifter and thrower (Track & Field) with 8 years of experience in both. I've received personalized workouts and technique instruction from doctors, biomechanists, sports physiologists, a Highland Games world champion, and multiple olympic coaches who have coached gold-medalists everywhere from New Hampshire to Modesto (CA).

Aside from my instruction, I'm also currently a Throws Coach for Plyometric Fusion, a Junior Olympic prep club. My specialty is the shot-put, but I can also provide coaching for the discus and hammer events. In weightlifting I've had numerous clients at my university. I provide workouts and teach the Olympic lifts (clean & jerk, snatch, etc.). Anything with a barbell is like the back of my hand, but I can coach all manner of free-weights and machines. I can also coach body posturing and injury prevention techniques that go a long way in weight-lifting both in terms of biomechanical efficiency improvements and joint health promotion. All this instruction has been invaluable in my progress as a 3-time SCIAC shot-put champion and 2-time NCAA Championship athlete, and I'm excited to share my skills.

Personally, my goal is to keep throwing the shot unattached and stay involved with Track and Field, and to break the 600 and 400 pound barriers in the squat and clean and jerk respectively - I'm very close.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bodybuilding

In addition to being an NSCA All-American in Strength and Conditioning for outstanding performance and achievement in weight-lifting, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from California Lutheran University with a Bachelor's of Science in Exercise Science. Lifting is what I do, and I love what I do! My clients include members of my University's water polo team who hired me as their Olympic Lifting technique coach, and experience working with Track & Field athletes, Football players, Swimmers, Olympic Lifters, Powerlifters, and recreational lifters who want to shape up. If you have a goal for your health/fitness/physique, I can help you achieve it.

Swimming

I have swam club for seven years, and am a seven time junior olympian in five different events. While I was always a head taller and probably 80 pounds heavier than everyone in my age group, I was also significantly more powerful. By working closely with my coaches at swim club San Gabriel Sea Gulls, I became the youngest person in the 100+ person club to attain their highest skill class: Platinum. As an eleven year old I practiced alongside people who were often seven years older than me. While rising through the ranks and continuing to improve my personal bests, I refined my technique, and developed especially my butterfly and freestyle - which are now my specialties.

I'd be happy to share my insights about the techniques of swimming, and offer lessons for new swimmers, and for more advanced swimmers seeking to refine their stroke.

Track & Field

I have more than eight years of experience competing in Track and Field, and for many of those years, I also coached. I was a three-year consecutive SCIAC Champion in the shot-put, a two-time NCAA Division Finalist in 2015 and 2016 (top 20 in the nation), and finished my senior year ranked 6th in the nation, a Ventura County Hall of Famer, and my university's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2016. My events are (primarily) shot-put, discus, and hammer throw, with some knowledge of the javelin. Of course, I know the basics of the other events, but the throws are my specialty.

I have turned people who had never picked up an implement into Junior Olympians within months and have gained extensive knowledge in the throws from my coaches, which include: Carl Wallin - coach of olympic gold medalist Adam Nelson and throws coach at Dartmouth since the 1960s; Bob MacKay - Modest JC throws coach for decades who guided 9 national record holders; Ryan Vierra - throws coach at CSU Stanlislaus and 5x world champion in the highland games; and Curtis Hodge - throws coach at CLU and Division 1 athlete. If you are looking to improve your technique and make the most out of your practices, I'd be happy to be of service.
