About Robert

I've been teaching private music lessons since 2001, with experience including traditional and jazz piano, electric, acoustic, and classical guitar (as well as banjo), trumpet and trombone, drum set and concert percussion (including 4 mallet technique), and tutoring in theory and musicianship. I have also taught K-5 general music, concert and jazz band, orchestra, accompanied children's and jazz choirs, and held weekly jazz jam sessions for middle- and high-school students.

Teaching has been a passion of mine since I was a trumpet-player in high school band. Since then, I have been blessed to teach a wide variety of students, from young and elderly beginners to exceptional performing musicians. My goal is for students to really understand what they are doing - while also encouraging the benefit of rote- and muscular-recall. I have discovered and refined many systems of learning music that are not commonly taught, which enables my students to progress much more quickly than those taking lessons with amateur teachers. I encourage self-efficacy, but also provide helpful guides and encouragement towards this end - I want students to eventually be able to effortlessly teach themselves as much as possible, while utilizing resources (like a private tutor) in the most efficient and beneficial ways.

At Northwest Nazarene University, I earned a triple-B.A.: Applied Music Theory/Composition, Music Education (K12), and Applied Piano, with honors, as well as earning a teaching credentials for Music K-12 (Idaho). My GPA qualified for Summa Cum Laude, and I was inducted into Phi Delta Lambda, the school's honor society for the top 15%.

Besides earning institutional scholarships for piano and jazz, I also won the Idaho Shaffer piano scholarship competition two years in a row. I was the pianist for the university's top jazz band, the "NNU Jazz Revival" for three years, and also performed in the newly formed "NNU Percussion Ensemble." Studying under Dr. Walden Hughes (Piano), Camden Hughes (Jazz), and David Gluck (Percussion), I received awards for piano performance, jazz performance, percussion performance, and composition.

I have a very flexible schedule, and respond to inquiries very quickly - I also offer online lessons, and my rate is the same ($60/hour). My students can also benefit from discounted prices on curriculum and books because I have direct access to some publishers. Contact me for more details!

Let me know how I can help you in your studies, I would love to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

Firstly, one of my B.A. subjects is Applied Theory/Composition - meaning I have satisfactorily completed coursework in music theory, musicianship, composition, counterpoint, forms & analysis, and arranging. I am familiar with many music-engraving programs (primarily Sibelius and Logic Pro X), and have experience with various DAWs, which enables me to work with students using budget programs such as MixCraft, Noteworthy Composer, or GarageBand to compose. I have written music (both as coursework and professionally) in many styles, including solo piano, jazz piano, video game music, progressive metal, chamber ensembles (various), solo guitar, and serial-music, among many other genres.

Drums

I have studied percussion independently since 1994, and took formal pedagogical lessons in percussion beginning 2011. Although my B.A. is not specific to percussion, I have coursework in percussion technique and ensembles - The B.A. in Music Education (K12) requires a pedagogical understanding of percussion (including drum set) of sufficient capacity to teach high school band, jazz band, and marching percussion. I have also performed in jazz, rock, pop, worship, and metal situations on drum set, and have classical training in timpani, 4-mallet marimba/xylophone, marching percussion, and have coached one particular student to prepare to win the upcoming yearly speed competition held by W.F.D. (World's Fastest Drummer). I have also held recitals in percussion, and have performed extraordinarily-difficult repertoire including The Black Page (Frank Zappa), and C.A.F.O. (Animals as Leaders).

Ear Training

The B.A. in Applied Music Theory/Composition involves a full two-year course in "Musicianship" (Ear Training/Development). Since I also teach jazz, which is heavily focused on the use of aural understanding for the purpose of improvisation, as well as the fact that ear-training is not a separate and distinct field from musical training in any instrument - it is naturally included in all of the lessons I teach, even for percussionists - I am well-versed in pedagogical methods for tutoring in this category.

General Music

I earned a B.A. in Music Education K12, which includes pedagogical training in teaching general music in a public school setting. I also have a teaching credential for Music Education K12 in Idaho, and my student-teaching placement included an 8-week intensive full-immersion course in teaching at the elementary level, grades K-5 at Centennial Elementary in Nampa, Idaho. This also included an additional 8-week student-teaching placement at the secondary level at Vallivue Middle and High School.

Guitar

Having a background in piano made studying guitar very easy, so when I began around 1998, I had brought my playing ability to a sufficient level within only a few years. Since 2001, I have taught private lessons in guitar, including electric, acoustic, and classical - and I've also applied the theory of learning a stringed instrument to bass guitar and banjo - my understanding of these instruments helped significantly when I was required to take stringed instrument pedagogy for my K12 B.A. in Music, so all of the pedagogical techniques I learned in my undergrad apply to teaching guitar. I have experience performing solo classical guitar (mostly original compositions, but also accompanying students), rock and metal guitar for several bands, and acoustic guitar in worship situations.

Music Theory

I hold a B.A. in Music Theory/Composition and have received awards for music composition at Northwest Nazarene University. I am currently enrolled in graduate coursework for music composition (a theory-heavy degree), and I'm also currently a T.A. at the university level for undergraduate music theory courses, where I won a full scholarship in composition. I am also versed in music engraving programs such as Sibelius, various DAWs including Logic Pro X, and have experience with budget software for young composers.

Piano

I earned a B.A. in Applied Piano, which involves coursework in piano performance and pedagogy - I also have a B.A. in Music Education (K12), which included educational theory and methods specific to elementary and secondary students. Since I have taught private piano since 2001, earned this degree, had over 23 years of private piano lessons, obtained a K12 teaching credential in Idaho, and won private and institutional scholarships in piano performance, I have both the experience and qualifications for teaching and tutoring private piano at all levels. Jazz piano theory and performance has also been my main focus over the last four years.

Trombone

My student-teaching placement at Vallivue Middle & High School involved usage of my pedagogical training in brass instruments. I often used the trombone & trumpet to model for band students. The training in brass instruments was a requirement for my B.A. in Music Education (K12), and I have a teaching certificate for the same in Idaho, which qualifies me to teach band at the secondary level.

Trumpet

My student-teaching placement at Vallivue Middle & High School involved usage of my pedagogical training in brass instruments. I often used the trombone & trumpet to model for band students. The training in brass instruments was a requirement for my B.A. in Music Education (K12), and I have a teaching certificate for the same in Idaho, which qualifies me to teach band at the secondary level. I also performed on trumpet since 1995 in concert and (since 1997) jazz bands, and I also successfully auditioned in trumpet for placement in the University of Oregon "Top Campus Band."
