I am a commercial fisherman as well as a substitute teacher. I used to teach full time but lost my leg in an accident and have found it more fun to fish and teach as well as run a nonprofit organization that takes wounded warriors and veterans fishing. I have two children who are now in college and have been married for 23 years.
My wife and I also have a few cows so we can raise grass fed beef and enjoy raw milk. I have been a credentialed teacher since 1997.
I currently spend 9 days a month in junior high and high school classrooms. This has given me the ability to stay up to date on what is currently expected by most teachers. I am an outstanding writer and have even written a book. It has not been published yet. My name also appears in The Running Dream by Wendelin Von Draanen as I helped with the research part of the book.
I did my student teaching in a Kindergarten classroom and I also ran a school for at risk youth where we were able to take a student who came in functioning at a first grade level and after a year in my school the same student tested at a fourth grade level. This happened with all of the students enrolled in El Puente Elementary prior to losing funding in 2001.
I try my best to make the learning experience fun and find creative ways to make it more interesting. Yes I do have high expectations but I am confident we can reach them and even have fun in the process. Bottom line it still requires effort on your part as well as mine. If you have any willingness to learn and improve I am the tutor for you. I am a commercial fisherman as well as a substitute teacher. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certificated employee of Santa Maria Bonita School District as well as Santa Maria Joint Union High School District. I have a current California Teaching Credential and work 9 days a month in classrooms.
This gives me an advantage as I know what is being taught in most classrooms and I have many tricks to make learning more fun and easier.
The skills I possess in every subject taught in grades k-6 make me an ideal tutor as i am able to tutor at this level with great confidence and excellent communication skills with both the student and the parents.
In teaching kindergarten and first through third grades I have found the use of phonics to be an invaluable tools to teach children how to pronounce words. It is also very useful for English language learners. I have even enjoyed using phonetic spellings of words found in the dictionary to teach lessons such as the correct way to pronounce the word "often" in which the "t" is not pronounced.
I graduated Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in Behavioral Sciences and a minor in Criminology. I had a 3.96 overall GPA and a 4.0 in Criminology. My name is on a plaque displayed in the Criminology department at Cal Poly as one of the few students to ever achieve a 4.0 in the minor.
In teaching study skills I am able to employ a number of tools for the student to use in an effort to become better at studying. One tool a learner can use is to dedicate a certain time each day to study. That is, to set aside 30 minutes specifically to study each day. Another is to form a study group with a few class members.
I also like to encourage the learner to make and use flash cards. In each case it is important to find a method that will work for the individual student and sometimes to modify and adjust the methods to each learner.
