About LeAnn

What does it take to become a successful student? The question is often asked and the answers are endless, yet for some students, school success remains elusive. Why is that? My experience has shown me that school success is related to the student finding out what they need to do individually, to be successful---there are no pre-packaged answers or approaches. Individualized instruction and support are the best forms of help. Assisting the student in identifying how they learn best, finding strategies for organization and assignment approach, as well as other tools that foster independence which allow the student to work smarter and not harder are solid solutions to school-related problems.

I have 17 years of high school teaching experience in both public and private settings. I taught high school social science as well as special education. I understand where learning breaks down for students and how to help them put strategies in place that allow them to show their teachers what they know; often times school failure is connected to the student not being able to adequately communicate to the teacher the knowledge they do have.

I have provided direct instruction to students in academic crisis, who were failing all classes, and who had no strategies to help them repair the academics or their motivation. Students don't want to fail and my hope is to help students succeed in order to meet their personal goals in life. I believe that school doesn't have to be difficult; there are solutions to every school failure issue and I know how to facilitate moving from failure to success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I possess a Master's degree from Santa Clara University and have worked as an Education Specialist for over 9 years in California public high schools. I specialized in working with students who have ADD/ADHD in my career--I understand how to help them manage their inattention and all that comes with it.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I possess a valid Education Specialist Credential in the state of California. My Education Specialist Credential has the state required Autism Authorization in the renewal codes of my credential. In my 10 years as a Education Specialist, I worked with students who were categorized on all levels of the Autistic spectrum. I worked with students one and one and in group settings to help them navigate the social and academic challenges presented to them in their daily lives as high school students.

Dyslexia

As an education specialist I worked very closely with students who struggled with dyslexia. We worked on strategies to help with reading, writing, and math---strategies that would make it easier for them to manage the textual information they were required to work with in their core academic classes.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught in the California public school system for 17 plus years. My education specialist credential states that I am able to teach in a self-contained classroom in grades K-12. I have given additional direct instruction in all subjects in my 10 years teaching in special education. My special education experience also supports the fact I am a leaning specialist, not just a content specialist. As a result I am qualified to provide support to students who are struggling with learning in general.

Religion

I have grown up in the Lutheran Church. I am a devout believer in Christ and know how to help students read the Bible, understand the messages inside the stories, and write about those messages critically.

Social Studies

My Single Subject credential that is valid and current in the state of California allows me to teach all social science subjects in a 6-12 grade setting. I have taught Government, US History, Economics, World History, and African American History in California and Chicago high school settings for 10 years.

Sociology

As an undergraduate at the University of California at Santa Cruz, I earned my bachelor's degree in Sociology.

Special Needs

In my 17 years of prior teaching experience I worked with students who had special needs both officially as an education specialist, and unofficially as a general education teacher. My experience in working with students who have special needs includes working with students who have ADD/ADHD, processing deficits, language and math difficulties, reading and writing fluency issues, as well as anxiety. I am well versed in current research and know how to help all students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities succeed in school.

Study Skills

In my 17 years of teaching high school students, I quickly learned that good study skills create conditions for school success. As an education specialist I worked with students on a daily basis to help them identify and create strategies that would assist them in implementing study skills that would allow them to be successful in all of their classes. Planners, checklists, graphic organizers, and self-created study tools for test and assessment preparation were items that my students and I used and implemented in our work with each other everyday.
