About Rachel

As a teacher and a parent, I bring patience, a gift for creating structure, and a love of learning to the educational process.

I hold a Master's degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley, where I spent three years working as a graduate student instructor in English composition and sophomore literature survey courses. Later, as a homeschooling mom, I developed structured curricula for my daughter from kindergarten through the seventh grade, combining creativity with a solid grounding in language arts, history, Judaic studies, math, science, art, music, physical education, and community service. I am also a former technical writer in the telecommunications field, where I developed clear, accurate, and practical instruction manuals over the course of a 15-year career. At present, I am a part-time graduate student at Union Institute & University, where I am working on an online Master's degree in History and Culture, with a focus on Disability Studies.

Whether I am working with children, teaching college students, or writing technical manuals, my purpose is always to be an ally in the learning process and to inspire people to have greater levels of confidence in their own abilities. I have always loved the process of learning, and I have a passion for inspiring that love in others. I welcome students with a wide range of needs and abilities, and I look forward to helping you develop a learning plan tailored to your individual goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I have written a number of articles about Asperger's and autism over the past several years, along with three books on the subject. I have maintained two sites devoted to Asperger's and autism, and I have counseled a number of parents about their children's challenges and experiences. I am also a graduate student in History and Culture, with an emphasis on Disability Studies, and one of my areas of focus is autism research.

I worked as a lay rabbi for several years. In this position, I taught workshops on the Jewish Bible in area schools and churches, and I participated in interfaith study sessions with Christians, Buddhists, and Muslims. I prepared sermons that involved close textual reading and interpretation, and led a weekly Torah discussion.

Elementary (K-6th)

My daughter went on to receive straight As in high school.

As a homeschooling parent, I taught my daughter to read using the phonics method. She was able to read the Lord of the Rings trilogy in the third grade.

Religion

I am a former lay rabbi and co-director of The Tiferet Center, a Jewish community service organization. As the co-director, I taught classes on Judaism and Jewish culture at the Academy at Charlemont, Greenfield Community College, the Upward Bound program, and several local churches. Classes varied from one-hour workshops on the core values of Judaism to week-long units that included close textual study of the Bible, explorations into the nature and purpose of Jewish practice, and discussions about Jewish history and the imperative toward social justice. I also participated in interfaith work and interfaith study with Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists.
