Cal State U. Los Angeles (Child Development)
For the past five years I worked at a local middle school in the Special ED. Department. My Bachelors Degree in Child Development helped me appreciate the need for students to have a strong foundation in Phonics to become fluent readers. Many of our students read at a lower grade level and a few could not read at all. We helped them learn the rules of phonics. They learn what sound each letter or letter combinations make. Once they learned the rules, with practice, their reading improved. Even the students who could not read when they first came to us, were reading albeit at a lower grade level, but they were reading. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
