About John

Hi everyone, and thanks for checking out my profile!

If you or a loved one needs instruction in English language or preparation for any standardized test in English, look no farther.

I have over 20 years of experience working with students of all ages and all levels of English fluency. Most of my students are high schoolers or adults, but I can work with students of all ages.

I focus on both on getting results and identifying and correcting any issues that might be holding a student back from reaching his or her full potential. I am patient and understanding of all the issues facing students preparing for a test or struggling with English at school or at work.

A quick run-down of the subjects I teach:

High School Test Prep: ACT, SAT, iSEE (English sections)

I am extremely effective in preparing students for these tests, which are among the most important tests a student will take. I can supply material taken from real tests, and I go through each question with the student, identifying the type of question and the appropriate strategy. My students constantly tell me that they scored much higher than they had anticipated after working with me. Please see my student testimonials.

Non-native English speaker Test Prep: TOEFL, IELTS (All sections)

Did you get a 55 on TOEFL but need a 90+ score? I can show you how to do it. Most of TOEFL and IELTS students see their scores increase by 30%-50% after studying with me. We cover all parts the test, with special emphasis on the sections that give you the most trouble. Need a 26 in the TOEFL speaking section for licensing qualifications? Many of my students do, and most of them attain that score after working with me. I also cover IELTS with the same results, for students who take that test. Please see my student testimonials.

Grad Student Test Prep: GMAT (English section)

Critical reasoning is the secret to a successful life, and GMAT is how your critical reasoning skills are measured. We work on logic, arguments, and fallacies. We also work on how to analyze reading passages and how to identify issues in sentence correction quickly and efficiently.

Other high school English:

Reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and composition are all subjects I teach, and can help you or your child work through any problems that might be affecting their grades. In each case, I look for any underlying issues that may be affecting their progress. I also try to show the student how reading and writing can actually be fun, and even fulfilling. I also monitor the student's assignments and make sure they are done in a timely manner and satisfy the teacher's requirements.

Other college English:

I can help with term papers, research papers, and any other facet of college-level English. I teach college writing and reading skills, and I also can proofread your papers before you submit them to ensure you get the highest score possible. I can discuss literature you need to read, and also go over the basics of outlining, time management, thesis writing, self-correction, etc.

ESL and other English:

All ages and levels are welcome. If you need to improve your English for school, work, or socialization, I can help. Vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and speaking help are all available. Let me help you attain the level of fluency you desire.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Location: I generally serve the San Gabriel Valley region, between Pasadena and downtown LA on the west to Diamond Bar in the east. I can travel north to the Foothill region or south as far as Whittier. Depending on schedule and travel time, I may be able to help students outside of this region.

Materials: I can bring all the materials you need, although you may want to buy your own books for test preparation as well. I can recommend what to get. In the case of HS English, please have your assignment and any books you are using available for us.

Where to meet: Usually I meet at the student's residence, but any public place with tables is okay as long as it is not noisy. Coffee shops and fast food restaurants are okay. Outdoor parks are okay if weather permits. Libraries are usually *not* okay, unless you have reserved a private room (many libraries do not permit tutoring)

If you need more information about me or my teaching methods: Please feel free to contact me via Wyzant messaging to discuss your specific needs. I am happy to answer all of your questions. Please allow a few hours for a reply because I may be in class.

I have worked with students from over 50 countries, from age 9 through 83. I hope you will be the next one I help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

All general English skills, including writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary building, listening, pronunciation, test preparation. For native speakers and ESL students.

ESL/ESOL

ESL is my specialty. I have worked with students of all ages, from over 30 different countries, from absolute beginners learning their very first words to advanced students seeking an additional edge. I have a variety of effective and fun techniques that make learning English easier. I tailor my lessons to meet the needs of each individual student. I help students overcome shyness, pronunciation difficulty, and forgetfulness. I am proud of my record of success on two continents with my ESL students.

Grammar

Basic grammar through advanced grammar, for native speakers and ESL students. I offer special techniques for understanding how grammar works, applying grammar properly, and checking your own grammar.

Proofreading

Proofreading for test taking, essay writing, and technical writing. Learn the most common mistakes made by writers and how to avoid them. Understand the function and effective use of punctuation. Learn how to analyze a sentence so that errors are easy to spot.

Reading

Reading skills for children and adults, native speakers and ESL students. Depending on the needs of the student, I focus on elementary reading ability, standardized test prep, how to read more efficiently and effectively, and speed reading. I approach reading with the notion that reading can be fun, even if it is part of a test. I am very patient with those just beginning to read, and offer creative techniques for improvement.

SAT Reading

SAT reading can be challenging for most adults, let alone young people whose vocabularies are still developing. I offer practical ways to analyze written passages, accurately infer meaning, see their structure and organization, and eliminate incorrect answer choices. There are systematic ways to improve SAT reading scores, and my lessons will familiarize you with all of them.

SAT Writing

SAT writing can be confusing for adults, let alone high schoolers who are still developing a familiarity with college level writing. I can help students analyze sentences, avoid errors, apply grammar appropriately, and outline and organize essays efficiently. Writing is crucial for success in college; preparing now can give a student a significant edge when test day arrives.

TOEFL

TOEFL is a specialty of mine. Students will understand how the TOEFL tests work, what TOEFL looks for in the written and speaking sections, how to find answers in the reading section quickly an accurately, and how to use selective note-taking to do well on the listening section. I also focus on time management, and how to avoid common mistakes. I also show you how taking TOEFL can actually be fun, and should not be feared. If you are facing a TOEFL test soon, or just want to improve your overall skills, please don't hesitate to make an appointment.

Vocabulary

For native speakers and ESL speakers. I offer effective vocabulary techniques that can help you speak English better and more accurately, help you pass your standardized test, improve your reading skills, or give you an edge in business. I can help you determine meaning from context and determine meaning from prefix, suffix, and root. A strong vocabulary makes your writing and speaking much more effective, and helps you get your point across with eloquence.

Writing

I offer writing lessons to suit every need. We cover structure, organization, essay formats, style, and effective word choice. These skills may be applied to standardized tests, such as TOEFL or SAT. I also offer practical advice and technique for those who would like to write effectively in English in business, correspondence, and even creative writing.

Words are not enough to describe this tutor's help — Despite the fact that I only took 4 classes during two weeks with him I was able to achieve my TOEFL IBT score with a dramatic improvement. My score jumped from 85 with 22 in speaking to 97 with 28 in speaking. I'm speechless and very grateful for you. You really deserve the best. Thank you in heaps. ...
