In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having received a BA overseas and then converting it here in the US, as well as completing a 24 unit TESL certificate, I have spent many hours in the classroom learning . Over these past two years I have worked independently doing my masters in education online which combined with work and family life requires discipline and an understanding of organization and time management. My teaching experiences have included working with ELL students in the public school environment and helping my own two children with study skills over the past 12 years.
Perhaps the most rewarding work that I have done in this arena is piloting and running an ESL program for parents of children in Headstart programs where the goal is not only to teach them English, but also to instruct them in methods of learning that they can then use with their own children. Study skills are the biggest part of this piece of my teaching. They include time management, organization, test taking skills, note taking, memorization aids such as flash cards and mnemonics, and taking learning styles into account.
