UCR, WGU (Women Stds, Biology)
Hello, my name is Joseph M., and I have been working in education a little over four years now. I taught a Social Science course at the University of California, Riverside, tutored English as a second language in the UCR international education program, taught English in South Korea, and currently instruct in various subjects at a Charter School. I am currently working on a BA in Biology with a teaching credential for fifth grade to twelfth grade. I am enthusiastic about education, and love to see my students progress subjects and achieve their goals.
My teaching philosophy is very much in line with my life philosophy, in that I always strive for improvement in myself and elevation of others. Concretely, this has taken the form of perpetual education, engagement in teaching epistemology, and working to develop a teaching methodology that is dynamic and diverse. Through teaching, not only do I solidify my own knowledge, but I work to understand my student's learning patterns and shape my teaching methods to their unique styles. It is important to me to know what a student's educational goals are, in order to understand what information should be centered while studying, and also what knowledge must be brought into the educational atmosphere in order to augment learning. I welcome all students to come and learn with me, and hope to grow strong instructive relationships.
I currently work at a charter school where I instruct students in various subjects including Algebra 1 and 2. I have also completed college level coursework in Algebra.
I am working towards a BA in Biology to teacher grades 5-12 in California. I have also passed the AP test in Biology.
I have 4 years experience teaching ESL/TESOL. I have TESOL certification from the University of California, Riverside. I taught English in South Korea for one year and tutored students of various cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds.
I have completed the CSET: Social Science I, II, and III for Teaching competence in World History, Government, Economics, and US History.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been trained in second language learning, and have experience studying five languages. I studied Spanish for four years, and come from a Spanish speaking background. I passed the Spanish AP test with a 4 and tested out of Spanish at the University of California, Riverside.
