About Miguel

I am a strong believer in the notion that anyone can become whatever they want, as long as they are willing to put the time and effort to do so. People are not born smart, they work to become smart. That is my goal for my students: to teach them that they can also become better at something they might be struggling at.

In high school, I did not do as well as I wanted to, so I did not get into the colleges I wanted to go to. I reflected and decided to go to community college to have a second chance to get into the schools I wanted to. I not only worked harder, but I worked smarter. This relentless effort allowed me to do well in community college and receive a full academic scholarship to study at UC Berkeley, where I also did well. This is why something like tutoring means a lot to me. It gives me the opportunity to inspire students, mentor them, and show them ways they can improve their study habits to become more effective scholars.

Here are some fun facts about myself, so you know I am not just some random student with no personality. During my time in community college, I was a student senator for three years, the president of a community service club, a board member for the honors club, and a research finalist. During my time at Berkeley, I was a director for the attorney general of the student government, an intern at the Alameda County Court houses, and the Executive Director of a small non-profit whose goal was to diversify legal education. I enjoy spending time with my loved ones and you can always catch me reading or discussing politics! Hope to hear from some of you and your students!

In high school, I spent two years tutoring Algebra 1 to the football team. I helped students understand concepts, as well as improve the confidence in their work.

In community college, I spent one year tutoring college level English. I helped groups of students analyze texts, while facilitating discussion. I also assisted students in preparing essays, from outlines to thesis construction. My main goal in this role was to help students struggling with their English classes and guide them to understand the material so they could become self-reliant.
I also tutored Political Science and Debate for two years in community college. I mainly tutored in groups for Political Science for classes in Political Theory, International Relations, Comparative Politics, and American Politics. My role included analyzing texts, facilitating discussion, and helping construct organized arguments. In addition, my role tutoring for Debate allowed for me to teach individuals how to construct and present organized arguments, which I applied to essay outlining and thesis construction for my English tutees.

During this time, I also spent three years tutoring third graders at Stoneman Elementary School in reading, writing, and basic math.
I also spent two months teaching English to an Italian family in Rome, Italy for 20 hours a week. I constructed my own curriculum which included speech, pronunciation, grammar, and writing.

Lastly, I spent this past academic year working at the Alameda County Courthouse in Oakland, CA where I helped develop legal documents and declarations for individuals filing in housing law, family law, and small claims law. In total, I spent 300 hours during this internship and improved my writing skills by the constant need to write to complete these legal forms.

With time and a effort, you can become whatever you want to be. I want to help students feel confident about themselves and teach them good study habits that can be applied to other subjects, while also teaching them to become independent scholars.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I spent two years in community college participating in Parliamentary style debate across the Southwest against other two-year and four-year schools debating current issues. In my final year of debate, I brought in half my teams wins at the national tournament (called NPDA), which lead to us becoming the third ranked community college in the country at debate. I was the team captain, which also demonstrates my proficiency, but I also served as a mentor and coach for the newer members of the team. Lastly, I tutored debate for a year at my community college.
