About Adaora

Hello!

My name is Adaora; I recently completed my Masters of Health Science degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland. Although I pursued a graduate degree in Public Health, I have a strong background and passion for Education and youth development.

Prior to graduate school, I worked for Girls Incorporated of New York City as a day-time class Instructor for middle and high school programming; I taught the health, media literacy and economic literacy classes. Before this, I served as a full-time City Year (Americorps) volunteer at a middle school in the South Bronx; I was the Manager of Curriculum for both day-time and after-school programming. In my free-time, I provided site-based and/or private tutoring for K-12 students as an Independent Contractor at Champion Learning Center and the Learning Shop Inc. During undergrad, I worked as the Participant Supervisor for the Upward Bound program, an academic enrichment program providing opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance.

When appropriate, I use project-based learning techniques to tutor/teach because it reinforces key concepts and necessitates that learner teach-back. Learning should be something everyone looks forward to, especially if it is engaging and fun.

Math and English have several things in common--both have a unique vocabulary, there are multiple ways to produce the same result/convey the same meaning and when concepts are applied in a useful context, it makes more sense. My strength as a tutor, is my ability to make math relevant.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and received training in its four sub-fields (Biological/Medical, Archaeology, Linguistics and Cultural Anthropology).

Native speaker; experience writing curricula and working on manuscripts for publication.

Former Instructor/Educator in public middle and high schools using Common Core standards.

If you think I am a fit for you or your student, feel free to reach out to me!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
