I graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Cognitive Science and a concentration in Cognitive Neuroscience. I also have two Minors: Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Civilizations and Cal Teach (Math and Science Education). I passed the 3 Math CSETs (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) and I completed the Cal Teach Credential Program at UC Berkeley and have earned my Single-Subject Preliminary Teaching Credential in Mathematics. I have taught Math 1 and Math 2 at Berkeley HS and I will be teaching at Antioch HS starting Fall 2018.

In the past, I taught a DeCal (UCB class taught by the students for the students) for 3 years both by myself and with 1 to 3 others on the reading and writing of Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphs. I've completed field placements in 3rd, 7th, and 8th Grade Math classes, a 7th/8th Grade after school program, and in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry classrooms. I was also a Pre-Algebra Instructor for College for Kids 2016 at Diablo Valley College (DVC) and I taught a free semester-long SAT Math preparation course at Oakland High School as part of People's Test Preparation Services (PTPS).

I have always been passionate about education, and I love being able to help and teach others. I was homeschooled for nine years so I am able to both relate to homeschooled students as well as feel fairly confident that if I was able to teach myself these materials, I can teach others as well. In high school, I independently tutored a variety of subjects at the high school and middle school levels and served as a Teacher Assistant. While I have the most experience tutoring math subjects and essay writing, I have tutored and provided assistance in other subjects as well (e.g. psychology, US history, Statistics, English, etc.) I have also tutored students who are homeschooled, taking supplementary online courses, or in credit recovery programs. I can help with both regular "College Prep" courses, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, some Common Core, and various test prep (e.g. AP, SAT, GED, HESI, ASVAB).

I pride myself on being able to explain concepts and help students effectively learn material. I also know that students can be quite busy (in high school I participated in Varsity Soccer, Mock Trial, Model UN, etc) and I am here to help students to make the most of their time both with me as well as when they are studying on their own or in a group. I fully understand that everyone learns differently, and I work with students to see how I can best help them to succeed. As such, I always welcome feedback from students and parents, and I will try to incorporate it into future lessons. Feedback is a great way to improve the educational experience for current and future students.

I am available for both in-person and online lessons. Wyzant has a great online platform that allows for video chat, whiteboard space, screen sharing, and even equation editors. I can also help by critiquing essays, explaining math problems step-by-step, or taking notes (if I have possession of equivalent materials).

I try to be as flexible with scheduling as possible, however I currently require a 16 hour cancellation policy. If a cancellation is made within 16 hours of the lesson, I reserve the right to bill students at half-rate. If the student is tardy to a lesson, I reserve the right to charge students for the time I spend waiting for their arrival. If I have waited for a tardy student for a reasonable length of time (15 to 30 minutes) and the student has not contacted me to indicate that the student will be arriving, I reserve the right to charge the student for the time I have waited and the rest of the lesson as a cancellation. This does not mean these amounts will be charged, just that I reserve the right to do so if I see fit.

To promote a safe and neutral study environment, I highly encourage that tutoring sessions occur in local public locations such as libraries or community centers.

Please talk to me if you need any clarification or would like more information on my tutoring experiences or practices!

I look forward to being of service and helping students achieve and surpass their goals!

Public Speaking

I have a lot of experience with public speaking through my participation in Mock Trial, Model United Nations, in-class speeches and debates, etc. This semester, I will be Facilitating (essentially teaching) a DeCal (class for students by the students) at UC Berkeley. I have gone through the process or gathering material/data, analyzing the data, synthesizing speeches or arguments, and then perfecting delivery and timing. My presentations have ranged from 30 seconds to 10 minutes depending on the situation. I can help individuals practice their timing, enunciation, and their overall confidence with speaking to a multitude of people. These skills can also benefit people in one-on-one situations and even when they are holding conversations over the telephone.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have volunteered in a 3rd Grade Math classroom for 1 semester and have taught two Common Core lessons to those students through the CalTeach program at UC Berkeley. I have several years of experience tutoring Algebra 1 for High School and Middle School students. Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts. I have worked with students who completed Algebra 1 online, through credit recovery programs, and in a traditional classroom setting. I have tutored both traditional Algebra 1 and in Common Core. While I have spent significantly less time tutoring Math for K-8 students, I have been one of the go-to people in my family to help my younger sibling with homework as we were growing up so I do have some experience working with kids. I completed Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. I have also taken a Calculus class in college and will be taking Discrete Mathematics in the Fall.
Reading,

Reading

I love reading and it has always been a hobby of mine. I know that reading a variety of literature types and sources dramatically improves comprehension. Thus, I will incorporate different readings into my tutoring where applicable. I will also work with students to enhance their reading comprehension skills. If there is a particular skill related to reading that the student wants to develop, feel free to let me know and I will try to design lessons that will make them successful.
Spelling,

Spelling

To enhance students' spelling abilities I may combine readings, online activities, games, and tried-and-true methods to remember spelling (e.g. mnemonics, color coding, etc). Vocabulary and spelling are related, although doing well in one does not necessarily mean excelling in the other.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Between homeschooling and public schooling through high school, I always had grades that were some form of an "A". I now attend UC Berkeley. I know how to juggle academics, athletics, and miscellaneous extra curricular activities. I can show students different methods they might employ to stay on top of their material. Methods I may teach include using a timer, reward system, task list, highlighting, Cornell Note-Taking, how and where to seek supplementary materials, and understanding what should ideally be completed before attending classes or meetings with teachers and tutors so that students can learn the most. On the other hand, I can also teach them tricks they might use if they are pressed for time and aren't certain they will be able to devote as much time as they should have for a subject so that they will be able to achieve their personal best within reasonable constraints.

I have completed 3 semesters of college Calculus and while I initially struggled in Calc 1, I worked hard and earned an "A" in both Calc 2 and in Calc 3 (multivariable). Since I have experienced the frustration and difficulty first-hand but was able to overcome those setbacks, I believe I am in a better position to connect with students and explain concepts. I have tutored a variety of high school and college students in calculus and I am currently teaching several high school math courses.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have several years of experience tutoring math for High School, Middle School, and College students. Geometry is a unique course that introduces proof techniques, spatial thinking, logic, and helps students to build resilience and creativity. While challenging, the material can also be quite engaging and lends itself better to hands-on activities. Starting Fall 2017, I will begin teaching Math at Berkeley HS.
Reading,

SAT Math,

SAT Math

I have tutored several students in SAT Math in the past and during Fall 2016, I taught a semester long SAT Math Prep course at a High School that included weekly meetings and weekend workshops. I covered the major content from the "New SAT" and administered both collaborative classwork activities and quizzes designed to help students assess their level of understanding and provided homework assignments written in the SAT style to target problem areas.

Writing,

Writing

Writing styles and abilities are influenced by reading, so my tutoring tends to incorporate the analysis of readings and their application in the students' own works. If there is a particular writing skill students wish to enhance, please let me know and I will try to create lessons accordingly. I have been involved in everything from the proofreading of classmates' essays, to Copy Editor for the California Legal Studies Journal, to writing poetry and stories for my own enjoyment. I love reading as much as I love writing, and I hope to be able to help students succeed in their endeavors.
GED

Test Preparation

ACT English,

ACT English

I have helped students prepare for the ACT and SAT English portions by improving techniques and strategies for essay writing and reading comprehension.
ACT Math,

ACT Math

I am a math teacher and tutor who also does a lot of SAT and ACT math tutoring. I help students prepare by reviewing common topics, and questions, identifying the important parts based on a question's formats, and improving comprehension of word problems. This also includes a basic math skills review.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I have helped students prepare for the ACT and SAT Reading portions by improving techniques and strategies for reading comprehension. This includes skim reading, annotation, using context clues, and comparing answers in multiple choice formats.
ASVAB,

ASVAB

I have helped several students prepare for their ASVAB exams- mainly in the Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) and Mathematics Knowledge (MK) sections although I can also assist in Paragraph Comprehension (PC). I can provide extra resources that target difficulties such as understanding word problems, solving for volume, creating multiple linear equations, etc.
CBEST,

CBEST

I have completed exams deemed equivalent to the CBEST by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CTC). In addition, I have helped many students improve both their writing an reading comprehension skills. I've completed field placements in 3rd, 7th, and 8th Grade Math classes, a 7th/8th Grade after school program, and Algebra 1/Algebra 2 classrooms.
SAT Math,

STAAR,

STAAR

I can help students develop test taking strategies and study habits that will help them on any test -multiple choice and short answer- including the STAAR. As someone who experienced the STAAR which was a standardized test frequently administered to students in Elementary, Middle, and High School, I am in a good position to help students who wish to improve their own scores on the STAAR and reach mastery for the concepts tested. The STAAR test is mostly comprised of Math and English but also contains specialized Science and History tests which are designed to test state benchmarks. I help students best by identifying what areas need improvement such as content areas or general test taking skills and then I select practice problems that allow them to practice in these areas. I also work with students who have test-taking anxiety and aim to boost their confidence and ability to perform in a timed test environment like that of the STAAR.
TEAS,

TEAS

I have experience preparing students for the TEAS and HESI exam. This includes math drills, reading comprehension, and study strategies. I combine both targeted prep books and supplementary materials to best help my students prepare for their exams. If they have taken the TEAS or HESI before, we also look at the feedback from score reports to determine how to best structure the preparation. I am a UC Berkeley graduate who is currently in the Cal Teach Credential program which is preparing me to teach High School Math meaning I have a lot of experience teaching and presenting content in different ways.

Excellent

Christine taught me how to write my essay in preparation for my cbest writing test. She is amazing in terms of knowledge in writing. I never had queries for her which she never had given me valuable answer. An answer that is clear and simplified to make me easy to understand the point. Through her I understood that in essay test the most important is to answer the prompt, logically arranged, and supported with evidence. She is really amazing I highly recommend Christine.

Knowledgeable and efficient tutor

Christine was amazing. My daughter felt totally comfortable and Christine was able to teach her logarithms which she had struggled with. I requested four other tutors all of which were considerably more but Christine set the appointment first and I am so happy with the results. Her rate is very fair and she is a quality tutor.

Super sharp, friendly and knows how to teach.

My daughter was very pleased after working with Christine for only an hour on an Algebra 2 subject that she was having trouble understanding. She came home after the lesson smiling with relief and confidence. Thank you Christine! We will definitely use her services again.

Kind and Patient Tutor

Christine has been very patient with me while going over calculus and it's prerequisites. She's clear with her teaching style and if I need another explanation, she doesn't hesitate and slows down her pace when necessary. She understands that not every person has a strong foundation in math, so she breaks it down and explains why there are certain rules, etc. I would highly recommend Christine for your tutoring needs.
