I have completed the Lindamood-Bell Visualizing/Verbalizing program, Hooked on School Study Strategies course, and workshops that focus on goal setting and study methods. The following is a guide I put together for my classroom and tutoring students to help them become successful learners. *Purpose Setting Questioning: What type of assignment is it? What should my final product be? What resources (books, supplies etc.) will I need? When is the assignment due? Do I have a good study space? Do I have all of my study materials and are they organized by subject or color coded? Do I have access to my assignments and grades online? What will I do if I don’t understand the assignment? *Goal Setting: Set short-term and long-term goals by using a Study Plan Notebook that is broken down into days, weeks, months, and year. Break assignments or projects into smaller tasks and determine how much time is needed for each task, write it down, and check it off when the task is completed. Use color-coded folders or tabs to stay organized. *Study Methods: Use the SQ3R technique for non-fiction history and science reading --Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. Use Skimming and Scanning techniques to quickly gather facts for a report. Use Cornell notes, note cards, or outlining to put the information into understandable language. *Graphic and Audio Aids: Use pictures, maps, diagrams, charts, videos, reference materials, or music to understand and remember concepts more readily. Also use mnemonic devices to memorize factual information. *Test Taking Strategies: Before a test study the most challenging material first and use chapter headings and subheadings to help you learn the key concepts.
