Bio

Hi! I'm Amelia, I also commonly go by Amy. I'm a year away from receiving my Master's degree in English. As an undergraduate, I studied English and French. I've worked as a French tutor for the French Department at Cal State Fullerton, and as a writing tutor at the Writing Center as well. The thing I most love about working with students is being able to help them gain confidence, and develop a working style that makes them comfortable and works for them. I love to learn as much as I love to teach. I encourage collaboration and questions, and will do my best to make sure you understand everything and feel comfortable as we go along. I'm a creative writer, too. I mostly write poetry and short stories, primarily creative non-fiction, humor pieces, so if you like to write and are stuck with a creative project, absolutely send it my way. I speak fluent French, English and Spanish, as my family is from the Dominican Republic, so if you feel comfortable in any of those languages, I'm totally willing to work with you in any of them. I love to read, write, and I love dogs.

Fun fact about me? I'm blind, so Braille for me isn't a language, it's a way of life. I've been blind all my life and have a guide dog, who accompanies me everywhere. She's the most unthreatening and friendly creature you'll meet and will most likely hang out at my side while we work. I've absolutely worked with sighted students before, but am also qualified to tutor and help students learning Braille. This also applies to French Braille. As for French, I studied it throughout Junior High, High School and College, speak and listen to it often and am comfortable helping with any French concerns.

As I've mentioned I worked for a year and a half at my school's Writing Center, where we focused mostly on essays and short writing assignments. I'd love to help you develop your ideas, and also your vocabulary. I'm more than happy to work on word choice and sentence structure as well. Whatever you may need, I'm willing to help!

French

As a young child, my aunt spoke French to me. I studied the language all through Junior High, and High School, took more than the required amount of classes for a French minor, and even now when I'm no longer officially studying French, I use it on a regular basis, in conversation, and in writing. I'm fluent in spoken French and pretty near fluent in reading and writing it as well.

I am a fluent Braille reader and writer. I am totally blind and have known Braille since the age of 3. I have been using it all of my life to do all of my coursework for school, have taught it to blind and sighted students, and am also proficient in adaptive technology that used Braille. I am more than qualified to tutor Braille.

I do all kinds of writing: creative (poetry and short stories) academic essays and articles. I've worked with students to brainstorm ideas for their creative projects and have also done some editing and some collaborative writing as well.
