About Ashley

I'm a recent graduate from the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor's of Science in Bioengineering. I grew up in California with an interest in eventually (one day!) getting a teaching degree; my mom had an elementary school assignment on the fridge for almost a decade where my life's ambition was to teach one day. In high school, I did tutoring here and there for some friends, helping them out with math and english (correcting essay drafts is my jam) and I also taught free piano lessons at the local Boys and Girls' Club. During college, I was a TA for freshmen engineering classes, helping them with designing and fabricating prototypes.

I have experience teaching any range of age groups, from elementary school kids to college students, but I think my favorite group to tutor is high schoolers. I actually really loved high school, and I have a lot of exposure guiding younger friends towards suitable colleges by tutoring them with the SAT and helping them figure out what they want to do in life. I promise to tutor with all of my heart and give you my best effort, if you promise to do the same.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I took algebra 1 in the 7th grade, and have used algebra and calculus constantly throughout college. In addition, I initially had trouble grasping the basics, so now I'm capable of explaining algebra in a way that students who are having a hard time can understand.

AutoCAD

I have been using AutoCAD for different school assignments and personal projects for 3 years. In addition, I have also taught freshmen students at my college how to use AutoCAD for their engineering fabrication class, and I can help students who had previous training in other similar, but fundamentally different CAD programs learn how to use it. I can not only teach students how to do parts and assemblies, but also complete automated projects using the program.

Biology

I received A's in both biology and AP biology in high school, and received a 5 on the AP biology test. Biology was actually my favorite subject in high school, and influenced my choice into going into bioengineering in college. I have also tutored biology for a younger friend going into the AP test as well as beginning biology at the local middle school by my university.

MATLAB

I started learning MATLAB when I was a freshman in college as part of the math curriculum. For four years, I used MATLAB constantly in my classes for data analysis and finite element analysis. The only breaks I ever took from the subject were during summer when I was doing other types of research. I am confident in my ability to teach introductory MATLAB to students.

Piano

I started piano lessons 17 years ago, when I was 5. I continued piano lessons for the next 10 years. During high school, when I'd stopped lessons, I'd started teaching piano at the local Boys and Girls' Club. In California, I was two levels away from finishing the Certificate of Merit tests. Even now, I still sit down and play through random sonatas and concertos when I feel like it.

SAT Math

I received a 750 on the SAT Math and a 760 on the math section of the SAT.

Solidworks

I learned how to use Solidworks 6 years ago in high school and it is my favorite CAD program to use. I have taught students how to use it in a freshman engineering fabrication lab, and I know how to go from parts to assemblies, as well as how to create proper 2D drafts using the program. I can also show students how to do FEA and stress analysis using the program.
