About Sheila

Hi There! I know that you are frustrated or else you would not be looking for me. I want to be your tutor to help you unlock and unblock all of those questions you have about Shakespeare or writing your college essay or about all of those symbols and metaphors your teacher wants you to decipher.

I can help you learn to improve your, comprehension, your writing and your public speaking. Imagine learning to enjoy these ways of communicating and demonstrating your knowledge.

As your tutor, I will work as hard as you to help you find your confidence. That's what I am - your partner in your education.

I know how to make learning engaging and fun. As a theatre teacher, I make literature come to life as well as dissect the text. I taught AP Literature for 9 years with an average pass rate of 94%. I also taught public speaking, logic and debate, interpersonal communications and formal interviewing skills.

Sometimes, however, it is the grammar or basic writing skills that get in the way. We can work on all of this together. The most important thing is that you learn to believe in yourself as a student.

I know the pressures you are feeling to get good grades that will lead you to the college of your choice or to obtain your degree. I also know that there are many obstacles in your life that distract you from being able to do your best 100% of the time. As your tutor, I will mentor your curriculum needs and also support you on time management and stress reduction. Tutoring should provide support for you in all three of these play a part in your understanding of yourself, how you learn and your success. I am here to support your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I also successfully completed Level 2 with a 94% and went back to tutor Level I students, most of whom were from Russia and the Ukraine. Study Skills

I was responsible for designing, teacher training and administration of a school-wide study skills program for homeroom classes - grades 9 - 12. I then differentiated the curriculum for ELD students and students with special needs.

During the years of "No Child Left Behind", I was a TOSA for curriculum restructuring, to which we gave optimal attention through improving student study skills, organization, time management and learning how to differentiate use of different types of texts. What a difference this all made in student performance and success.

Theatre

Have an audition coming up?
Trying to understand Shakespeare?
Or are you wanting to design costumes for an upcoming show?

For the majority of my career I was the Creative Director of Theatre for high schools throughout Southern California. I teach acting, directing, play analysis, theatre history and playwriting.

It would be a pleasure to support you with your theatrical endeavors.

Voice (Music)

As a director of musical theatre, teaching students how to use their voices correctly as singers was an important part of my work. Breathing, vocal placement, pitch and tone are the skills needed to protect the larynx from becoming damaged through misuse. Additionally, interpretation of the song, the notes, the lyrics, the rhythm etc. are all so important to the emotional delivery and execution.

Writing

I have been a writing instructor for my entire teaching career. I can teach you how to organize your ideas and write an upper level essay regardless of the domain or the topic.

The secret? Learning to dissect the prompt and ensuring that the essay has total coherence.
