About Matt

Hi. If you're reading this, you're considering hiring me as a tutor. Let me explain why you should.

I have over five years of experience in teaching/tutoring. I have taught students of all ages, from elementary school students to adult police officers. My current specialties are the LSAT, ACT, and SAT.

I got my bachelor’s degree and then graduated cum laude from J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. I spent the next few years as a prosecuting attorney, during which I happily contributed to the overcrowding in our county jail systems. At some point I got the idea that I should help students avoid a life of crime altogether by getting high standardized test scores. And so I began focusing more on teaching and tutoring.

Though I’m technically a lawyer, my passions are teaching and writing. I am an expert in test prep at all levels. I have taken and mastered standardized tests, including the California Bar Exam (widely considered one of the most difficult exams in the world). I will teach you both the underlying content of the test you're taking AND the skills and strategies to score higher regardless of the content.

There’s something very gratifying about helping students realize their potential. The best teachers and tutors don’t just impart information, but they awaken something inside their students – an "aha" moment, or realization – that helps the students succeed on their own. This is incredibly valuable when students are taking an exam. The teacher can’t be there with them.

I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I scored a 32 on the ACT in high school, including a 36 on the English section. I have been tutoring and teaching the test for the last 4 years in both a classroom setting and through individual tutoring. I have worked for multiple national test prep companies and I know the strategies and materials each student will need to succeed. Let's get started!

ACT Math

I scored a 32 on the ACT when I originally took it in high school. I have been tutoring and teaching the test for the last 4 years in both a classroom setting and through individual tutoring. I have worked for multiple national test prep companies and can give you the same level of service at a fraction of the price. I can tell you everything the ACT Math section will throw at a student, and I know exactly what formulas you'll need to memorize and what strategies you'll need to succeed. Let's get started!

ACT Reading

I originally took the ACT in high school and scored a 32. For the last 4 years, I have been teaching the test in both a classroom setting and through individual tutoring. I have worked for multiple national test prep companies and can give you the same level of service at a fraction of the price. The ACT Reading section is all about timing and process of elimination. I can tell each student how to pace himself or herself by starting with the right passages, quickly and actively reading each passage, and tackling the easier questions first. I will also tell students how to eliminate suspect answer choices without even having to look at the passage. Lots of practice with these strategies will spell success on ACT Reading. Let's get started!

ACT Science

I scored a 32 on the ACT when I originally took it in high school many years ago. For the past 4 years I have taught the ACT in both a classroom setting and through individual tutoring. I have worked for multiple national test prep companies and can give you the same level of service at a fraction of the price.

The ACT Science section is often the scariest for new students because they don't know what to expect. I teach students exactly how to approach each passage and how to interpret the text and data given to find answers without memorizing lots of terminology. I also teach how to pace properly and finish each section on time. With the right technique and lots of practice, the Science section can be kind of fun. Let's get started!

LSAT

I'm a practicing attorney with lots of LSAT tutoring experience. I scored in the 98th percentile on my own LSAT and have trained many LSAT students over the years with excellent results. I am familiar with the methodology of the big companies (having worked for some of them) and can help you master whatever materials you choose to use.

SAT Math

I have taught the SAT for about 4 years in both a classroom setting and through individual and small group tutoring. I have hundreds of hours of experience with the test and have mastered it. I have taught and tutored many students who have scored well over 2000 on the exam.

The SAT Math section is often feared because of its "tricky" nature. Most people don't realize that the test writers use the same tricks over and over again. Once you're familiar with them, they're no longer tricky -- they're second nature! I teach students all the strategies they will need to score high on this section. All it takes is a very basic level of math knowledge and some practice. Let's get started!

SAT Reading

For the past 4 years, I have taught the SAT in both a classroom setting and through individual and small group tutoring. I have hundreds of hours of experience teaching the test and have mastered it. I have taught and tutored many students who have scored well over 2000 on the exam.

The SAT Reading section is often feared because of the perceived need to memorize lots of vocabulary words. In fact, most of the vocabulary questions on the SAT can be done without knowing all the words! Through use of process of elimination, root words, and context clues I teach students how to figure out questions without tons of unnecessary memorization. I also teach students all the strategies they will need to conquer passage-based reading and how to understand each type of question the test will through at them. Let's get started!

SAT Writing

I've taught the SAT in both a classroom setting and through individual and small group tutoring for the past 4 years. I have hundreds of hours of experience teaching the test and have mastered it. I have taught and tutored many students who have scored well over 2000 on the exam.

The SAT Writing section is my favorite section on the test. I have tutored students who can get almost every question right on this section because they know the grammar rules that are tested over and over again. I also teach students how to outline, format, and compose a high-scoring essay using specific examples and proper thesis development. It's a lot easier than it sounds. Let's get started!

Extremely knowledgeable and encouraging!

I worked with Matt on LSAT tutoring for over 4 months and it was an excellent investment! He went over strategies that were not even outlined in my LSAT course and identified weaknesses in my test taking strategies I did not even know were a problem. He taught me how to manage my time efficiently throughout the test and was always super clear about explaining questions I had on all 3 sections of t
