University of California, Irvine (Art History)
Hello! My name is Sanam, and thank you for looking at my profile as a potential tutor for you or your child.
I am currently a first year graduate student in San Jose State University and studying for my Masters in Occupational Therapy. I graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a minor in Biological Sciences. I have been tutoring on-and-off since the 8th grade to fellow classmates and younger children. I tutor K through 8th grade students in writing, spelling, reading, history, math, and study skills. I also tutor students of all ages who are having difficulties in reading comprehension and writing skills.
To receive greater insight and feedback on what I should focus more on during our tutoring sessions, I like to establish an email connection with my student's teachers identifying myself as a tutor.
As a graduate student, I have a lot of personal experience with efficient study skills. I try to help my students develop greater study habits by showing them simple color coordinated notes, and ways to create study sheets before tests.
I like to have my students feel rewarded for doing well in school, so sometimes I will give out (pre-approved by the parent) treats for particularly great accomplishments.
Since one of my greatest passions is reading, I would love to see my students develop a love for it as well. For young students who have difficulty with reading or reading comprehension, I have seen that using comic books or picture books are a great help. For older students, I try to pick out books that I believe are fun and easy to read so they can become confident in their abilities before I slowly start introducing harder books. Often, students are reluctant to read is because they have a hard time following along, so I make sure to ask questions about what we just read to make sure they understand. Depending on the student, if the child has a library card or books at home they would prefer to use, I often have homework assignments where they have to read a certain number of pages before our next session and write a short summary. Students who have difficulty in spelling or writing are often helped by reading more, so I encourage my students to read more as one way to help.
For students who need help with history or math, I help a child complete and understand their homework. Since many test questions on history revolve around dates or events, I will help the student make timelines and brief summaries of events to help the student remember them. In cases where more focus should be placed on math help, as well as going over homework, I create sample problems for more practice, as well as help organize the different methods in each chapter. Sanam is able to connect with her students. She is very patient and looks for ways to get the most interaction from her students. Flexible with her time as well. My son had an assignment we wanted to make sure he understood. We called Sanam and she was able to schedule something the same day! :) Would definitely recommend this tutor!
Responsible and knowledgeable as she always has been for the last two years she's been tutoring my boy. She really is one of a kind... the very best!
What was taking me 3 weeks to get done with my son, it took Sanam 2 tutoring sessions to finish, assignment was 100% completed beautifully with all of my son's thinking and work. Very pleased with our choice and luck!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am 23 years old, and have been tutoring for almost 10 years. Throughout high school I was asked by various teachers to tutor other students who were in danger of failing. Once I entered college I started tutoring K- 8th graders, and have been doing so for approximately 5 years. I graduated with a B.A. from the University of California, Irvine in 2012. When tutoring my elementary school students, I have realized that many of them lack confidence in their learning capabilities, so I make sure to prove to them that just because a certain subject is difficult for them it does not mean that they cannot do well in the class.
