In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I formerly served as Director of Educational and Speech Services and therapist for Western Neuropsychiatric Medical Group. The group operated three offices in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Specialists in the group included psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, neurologists, clinical social workers, and teachers. I administered and scored a wide range of educational and psychological tests, taught children and adolescents with special needs, and supervised the clinics' 25 teachers. I wrote reviews of tests for the diagnosis of ADD and ADHD for Buros Mental Measurements Yearbook. I spoke at national and international conventions on teaching children with special needs; for example, International Reading Association, National Council of Teacher of English, First Canadian International Congress on Education.
I have taught college courses in desktop publishing and written several books using programs such as MS Publisher, MS InDesign, Adobe Pagemaker, and Scrivener (Mac). I have used various DP programs to create newsletters for organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, city departments, and non-profit organizations. I taught writing and technical writing for many years to college and university students.
For five years I served as Director of Education and Speech Services for Western Neuropsychiatric Medical Group. I assessed and evaluated the educational needs of all children and adolescents referred for evaluation. The vast majority of clients attended public schools and designated as students with special needs, principally dyslexia, more commonly referred to as specific reading disability. I also taught a limited number of clients during my employment there. I spoke regularly about reading at national and international conventions including the annual meetings of the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and Canada's First Congress on Education.

I was a passionate student of golf for many years. A member of a country club, I played almost every day. For several years I taught golf full-time at Irvine Valley College in Irvine, California. I often took lessons from Jimmy Ballard, the best golf instructor I know about. Ballard instructed world-class players during several decades including Johnny Miller, Hal Sutton, and Curtis Strange. After working 5 years with Ballard, Strange won two consecutive U.S. Open championships. Abruptly leaving Ballard to work with a different instructor, Strange has yet to win another tournament on the regular or senior tour.
