Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

In Iowa I was hired by the most forward looking school district to teach 6th grade, all basic subjects. When I moved back to the University town, I taught a third year of 6th grade homeroom.

I studied computer programming; yet I ended up back in public schools where I specialized in elementary math for over 10 years. It was the era of the first Modern Math. I also taught 2nd grade and Title I math to weak third graders.

One summer I led a team of Title One teachers; I excelled at creating hands-on materials for students in all elementary classes.

Homeschool

I have taught groups of children in homeschool programs. For example, I taught a 6 week workshop on math topics. I was also a presenter at a regional workshop for several counties near Orange County.

I have created a game that always students a great deal of fun while they are reviewing or drilling on multiplication facts.

I was recently encouraged by one of those mothers in the group to resume tutoring math since I have a talent for telling stories and drawing in students with the details of the play or story.

Reading

In college I planned on earning an English major, but at the last opportunity to change majors, I selected the elementary grades. I tested highly on the Wyzant reading test.

I use humor as well academic texts as fields for reading practice. I like to see students enjoy all types of reading material. Does your daughter receive any kids magazines such as National Geographic for Kids? Has your school sent any specific practice materials home?

Study Skills

I have tutored in Orange County for over 18 years. Study skills were regularly a part of most lessons although usually the study skills were secondary to academic lessons.

It is very important that the student be approached with an encouraging, positive attitude. The initial lessons are presented within the goal of being efficient and increasingly accurate in understanding directions.

The initial lessons are quite simple and accompanied by high levels of praise and reinforcement. Humor and relaxation skills are intertwined within lessons.
The skills become more challenging and complex once the simpler skills are mastered.

I taught elementary grades in Iowa for 15 years; so when both teach and tutoring experience are added, I bring a wealth of sensitive, caring techniques and approaches to each tutored client.
