About Richard

I offer serious students the best of both worlds: A Stanford graduate specializing in blending traditional grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension as well as
fast-paced, engaging instruction on how to brainstorm, organize, develop and edit your academic writing. I've helped hundreds of students, third-graders through college students, master the writing process, and I specialize in teaching highly gifted students with Ivy League ambitions.

Having taught at St. Michael's Prep in Silverado, Flintridge Prep in La Canada, and El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, I now teach after school writing classes at Focus Learning Center in La Crescenta. These start with "fast and funny" oral-based grammar and vocabulary reviews before focusing on editing and revising weekly student writing assignments. I also specialize in preparing students to write the SAT 25-minute essay as well as college application essays. Students love my class' fast pace and entertaining explanations and examples, while parents love my strong background in traditional language and writing instruction.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
