About Rachel

I have been teaching public speaking and communication courses on the college level for the past 9 years. When it comes to quelling my students fear of public speaking, I have a high success rate. My approach to public speaking is very easy to grasp and can only make my students better. While tutoring sessions will be one on one, I want to give you an idea of my teaching philosophy in they typical classroom setting so you know what to expect from our time together.
Although there are many things that characterize me as a teacher, my teaching philosophy is based on a fundamentally optimistic view. I believe that all of my students, with the right tools, will be able to overcome any difficulties that the study of public speaking and communication might present. I believe that one of my best qualities as an instructor is my ability to inspire confidence in my students so that they feel comfortable expressing themselves regardless of their level of ability.
I strive to find innovative ways of teaching that address the diverse needs of all of my students. I offer a variety of approaches to the study of a communication by incorporating sources other than a textbook to motivate my students’ learning.
One of my strengths as an instructor is the enthusiasm I show for the subject I am teaching. Being an effective communicator is such a vital part of experiencing life to its fullest and I strive to have students understand the importance of being an effective communicator in every situation they encounter. While a student may never give another public speech again after my class, understanding the fundamental structure of a speech and how that message is communicated to others can only enhance one’s communication skills outside of the classroom.
In my public speaking and introduction to communication classes, students are required to give speeches and perform different communication acts regularly: this is not always easy for students who are having their first encounter with getting up in front of a group of people. The first step, then, is to put the student at ease in such a way that even the most timid student is able to make the most of his or her time in the classroom. In my teaching evaluations, many students refer to the type of atmosphere that a communication class should have and to how the learning environment in my classroom allowed them to express themselves: "She brings enthusiasm to the classroom and is very approachable", "Mrs. Friend is a great teacher who helped me become a better public speaker and made me excited about learning. She genuinely cares about each of her students and creates a great learning environment", "This class was very informative and a lot of fun. I walked away being a more confident public speaker", and “The best part about this class were the presentations, group activities and the ability to improve my way of communicating better with other people. I learned a lot from her and I learned a lot about myself. I am less shy now. Thank you for teaching me."
While I strive to impact every student in ways exemplified by the student comments above, I am aware that an instant shift in perspective is not always the case. For this reason, my sole purpose as a teacher is to supply my students with the basic tools of effective communication with the hopes of impacting an individual who has been my student some day down the road. The desire for this potential impact is what inspired me to begin my teaching career and will continue to motivate me to educate students in communication for years to come.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I currently teach public speaking and interpersonal communication classes on the college/university level. I have been with SOCCCD and University of La Verne for the past 5 years.
