In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

It is imperative for a student to have a strong basic understanding of math concepts in order to apply these concepts in higher grades. I believe in quick tests in order to determine where their strengths are and what areas need work. Some math concepts are quite abstract to elementary students and therefore require hands-on activities, working with math manipulatives, and one-on-one instruction.
Grammar is one of those things that if you don't use it, you lose it. Continual practice is something I strongly believe in. The students in my classroom completed daily paragraph editing, daily usage practice, and overall punctuation exercises.
As a fifth and sixth grade teacher, I was surprised at the lack of word processing skills the students possess. Word processing is a fundamental skill in this day and age.
I hold a Utah elementary teaching certificate for grades 1-6. I taught preschool and kindergarten for 3 years. I taught my 5-year old daughter to read at 4. I Use nonsense words, games, and various books to teach letter sounds, word chunks, word families, etc.along with continual 1-2 minute assessments to track progress.
There are so many components that go into becoming a successful reader. If, as an instructor, the goal is to make measurable progress with reading instruction, it is nearly impossible to discuss reading instruction without also discussing phonics instruction. If your student is struggling with reading comprehension (answering questions based on what was read/predicting outcomes/determining cause and effect, etc.) one problem may be that he is focusing so much on decoding the words they're reading, that he can't focus on the content. Many times students are taught HOW to read the words on a page, but not HOW to "read" the MEANING/PURPOSE of the words effectively.
Spelling also relates to phonics instruction. Spelling rules are taught in kindergarten through 6th grade. Obviously, these rules vary in level of difficulty. For example, the silent E rule is taught in kindergarten and derivational relation rules are taught in 6th grade (or earlier if the student is advanced). Many students have "holes" in their understanding of phonics and these rules. With an assessment, review, and reteaching of these rules, spelling performance can be improved. There are special cases in which students struggle to spell, even with a strong background in phonics e.g., dyslexia.
I taught elementary school for 7 years. I led remediation/reteaching groups for students who were not achieving benchmark targets. I prepared numerous students for end of level testing by using a variety of tools. I have home-schooled children during the past year and have taught them math, spelling, writing, science, and history successfully. I use flashcards, iPad apps, videos, short quizzes, and teach test taking strategies.
