About Sarah

As an actress I specialize in getting to know people quickly and deeply. We use specific "motivation" and "tactics" to reach our goals in a scene, and if something doesn't work in a rehearsal we try a new method until it clicks. I use a similar approach when tutoring my students. As we work together I gauge the attachment a student has to the subject matter and we establish goals, formal or informal, about how to best understand the lesson. Each learning style is unique and I honor that with fascination.

I have a master's degree in Theology. I began college wanting to teach Theology but soon learned a Philosophy background seemed to complement. Theater has been a constant hobby for over 10 years, and my job as a Costume Shop seamstress has also provided income in the film industry. I've taught subjects ranging from piano and cooking to gardening, maths, biology, women's health, reading comprehension, and psychology. I regularly contribute to multiple blogs and proofread professionally.

My natural interests in Literature, English, Grammar, Public Speaking, Theater and general Arts, however science and math are also available. I'm serious about teaching, but make learning fun with lots of patient creativity. I feel that if a student needs tutoring he or she is already feeling challenged, so homework assignments are kept to a minimum. Instead, oral assessments can provide proof of comprehension and we may dialogue about the subject if necessary.

Due to auditions I only teach online, except for Piano. I am generally available between 10am-8pm, but hours are flexible. Rates are $40/hour, and $25/half hour. Packaged deals available--contact me for more information.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve confident success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have a masters degree in Theology, specifically Catholic Christianity. I am currently working to complete a comprehensive study guide to teaching both Old and New Testaments using the RSV translation, however am familiar with a variety of biblical translations. I have access to several resources and research methods including Exegesis, and professional contacts within the field (i.e. Scott Hahn).

Common Core

The majority of my tutoring experience has been with elementary-aged students. I'm familiar with private and charter school systems, public school protocol, special needs facilities, and homeschool procedures. I can adapt well to a variety of policies for each student's primary teacher. I understand elementary ages to be of vital importance in learning, and seek the make the most of these formative years in the STEAM subjects.

Elementary (K-6th)

The majority of my tutoring experience has been with elementary and middle school-aged students, and their respective curriculum. I've taught students from private and charter school systems, public school protocol, special needs facilities, and homeschools. I can adapt well to a variety of policies for each student's primary teacher. I understand elementary ages to be of vital importance in learning, and seek to make the most of these formative years in the STEAM subjects. Favorite elementary topics include the alphabet in kindergarten, learning to make sentences in first grade, learning cursive in second, reading comprehension and subject/predicate distinctions in third grade, fractions in fourth grade, history and the US colonies in fifth grade, energy systems in sixth grade, handwriting practice in 7th grade, and high school prep- algebra in eighth grade.

Handwriting

I received excellent scores in elementary handwriting while in school. I continue to pen letters to friends and family using various styles, with an emphasis on clarity in penmanship. When taking the SAT, I was one of the only students in my classroom who knew how to write the honor statement in cursive. I value handwriting and it's history.

Homeschool

I have tutored home-schooled students in a variety of subjects throughout high school and college, including art, maths, and reading comprehension. I understand the particular need for mastering motivation as a teacher, and value the various teaching methods it can use. For example, I once allowed a boisterous young man to bounce on the trampoline while I read to him, then asked him comprehension questions which he answered well. Another young man thrived on creativity and we frequently turned lessons into projects--i.e. fractions learned by cutting an apple into corresponding sections, then having them for a snack.

I'm interested in the flexible schedule and individualized teaching style homeschooling allows.

Phonics

My experience in phonics tutoring began in middle school when I volunteered time to practice reading with the younger children. I value to relationship between senses in phonics: what a word looks like on the page and against other words, how it sounds hearing it and saying it, and how it feels anatomically preparing and coming out of the mouth.

Phonics takes particular patience and attention to the student, as the task of sounding out can be tedious; I do not rush my students but celebrate their victories. I instruct them to pay particular attention to the book's pictures, if applicable, to gather hints for the content of the respective story. Often, they children will know a word in the image they see, and it's a matter of teaching them how that word looks on a page; the results of these "aha" moments are immensely rewarding to both myself and the student (s).

Most recently, I've worked with special needs students practicing reading, using "blending" method with success. We also used a "word family" system recognizing relationships between words such as "bake, cake, make, rake."

Piano

I have been playing piano for 12 years, starting as a 5th grader. I am considered intermediate in skill, playing modern pieces (Yirumi) as well as classics (Mozart). I can site read, identify chords (major, minor, augmented, diminished), and have a general understanding of different Jazz variations to the standard octave. Please inquire further for specific questions.

Public Speaking

As an actress I regularly engage in public speaking, whether at table reads, rehearsals, performances, or press releases. Feedback on our material is necessary, and we must be able to articulate opinions or persuasions on the spot. Press interviews are opportunities for spontaneous responses and expressing truth non-offensively. I have experience in improvisational, scripted, and memorized speaking. Eye contact, syncopation, and warm approach are key!

As a high school student I participated in a rigorous public speaking program writing and memorizing 8 speeches in 4 months. As an elementary student I memorized a poem or speech annually to showcase in front of the class. My 8th grade year I won and had to present the ToastMaster's speech on "Cell Phone Rudeness" to the entire student body, teachers, and parents.

Reading

I have been tutoring reading for 10+ years using a variety of methods and even creating some for individualized attention.

Theatre

I have been acting for 10+ years on stage and in film. My credits range from student-directed one acts to professional shows.

I have access to a wide library of plays, scripts, and theory books as well as different documents to help categorize theater comprehension. I have experience as an actress, stage manager, crew, lighting and sound op, and costumer/seamstress. Please inquire for specific questions.
