BACKGROUND:
I have over 20 years of experience teaching the ACT and SAT, both in classrooms and as a private tutor. My private test prep students have gained admission to highly selective universities, including schools in the Ivy League.

I took my first tutoring job over 20 years ago at Santa Monica College, where I received an award for excellence in tutoring writing, grammar, and literature. While attending UCLA, I worked as a teaching assistant for 6 semesters, leading review sessions and grading student essays. As a private business English coach, I worked with executives for companies such as Cathay Bank, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Walt Disney, UCLA Medical Center, and the PGA. I've also taught English at a private university and at the largest ESL school in Los Angeles, where I also served as academic director.

My teaching style is personable, interactive, and student-centered. The key to my approach is “deliberate practice”. In every session, I show my students how to apply proven strategies to real test questions. I help students feel confident and start making measurable progress right away.

ACT English,

ACT English

A whopping 65% of the ACT English section tests a relatively small handful of grammar points. For an ACT tutor to help students increase their scores, the tutor must be intimately familiar with these grammar issues. Just as important, the tutor must be skilled in explaining and reinforcing the grammar in simple terms that students can quickly grasp and apply to the test. My 10 years experience teaching both test prep and ESL has enabled me not only to master the grammar, but also to become adept at breaking it down into small, easily digestible bites. (Before becoming a full-time test prep tutor, I taught ESL at Shepherd University, Santa Monica College, and Language Systems, International.) My ability to help students quickly identify the grammar problems presented on the ACT has produced outstanding results. For example, my most improved student on the December, 2015 ACT increased her ACT English score 5 points (from 25 to 30) after two months of weekly online tutoring with me. ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I have been teaching ACT reading and other standardized reading tests for over ten years, both as a self-employed private tutor and for a highly regarded test prep company. I also have ten years of experience teaching reading and vocabulary at schools such as Shepherd University and Language Systems, International. However, the results I help my students achieve are what truly qualify me as an ACT reading tutor. As just one example, my most improved student on the December, 2015 ACT increased her ACT reading score 7 points (from 20 to 27) after two months of weekly online tutoring with me. One reason my ACT reading students consistently achieve results is that I teach them how to leverage the design of the test. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an above-average knowledge of the ACT reading subject areas (prose fiction, social studies, humanities, and natural sciences) to do well on the test. I focus my ACT reading lessons on teaching students the specific types of responses the test actually rewards and how to produce those responses quickly and consistently.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

SAT Reading is the SAT section on which many students struggle most to reach their full potential. Thus, the single most important qualification for an SAT Reading tutor is clear: consistently helping test takers produce RESULTS. In my nearly 10 years as a full-time ACT and SAT tutor, I have cracked the code for achieving SIGNIFICANT score increases on SAT Reading. Even better, I can prove it. My WyzAnt profile features page after page of glowing reviews from parents of bright, high-achieving, but formerly frustrated test takers who, with my guidance, broke through the wall to achieve the SAT Reading score of their dreams. SAT Writing

SAT Writing

The Writing & Language portion of the redesigned SAT is similar to the ACT's English section. I have been tutoring this section of the exam since the first administration of the redesigned SAT in March, 2016. As a full-time test prep tutor focusing on the verbal sections of the ACT & SAT, I have analyzed this part of the test in-depth and have refined that analysis over the course of hundreds of tutoring sessions. Drawing on my own experience and the work of other test prep experts, I've put together a simple but powerful system for quickly increasing SAT Writing & Language scores.

Science

ACT Science

ACT Science

A common misconception about the ACT science section is that it is primarily a test of scientific knowledge. It is not. Rather, it is a language and logic quiz involving scientific content. You do not need an above average background in science to do well on this part of the test. If you can make sense of tables and graphs and learn to "deconstruct" the section's language games, you can do well on ACT science! I have 5+ years of experience tutoring ACT science. In that time, I've helped hundreds of students achieve above average score gains. I've done so by enabling them to see past the superficial complexity of the material. The passages and questions in the ACT science section often contain extraneous, highfalutin language that masks their true simplicity. I teach students to ignore the *noise* and get to the heart of the matter. The results speak for themselves!

Catherine - 17 lessons

I'm a rising junior in high school, and I reached out to David December of 2020 in preparation for the June SAT. After taking classes with David once a week for around five months, my score went from 1300 (650 for reading and writing) to 1580 (780 for reading and writing). I loved his teaching methods and found that his test-taking tips were super helpful. David has a solid understanding of the structure of the test, and I really liked how he only gave me real tests as homework so I was fully prepared. I would not have been able to do as well as I did without his great tutoring!

Success!

Our daughter’s story started in December 2020 with an ACT Reading score of 23 ( 10 questions unanswered because of lack of time, plus some wrong ), and an English score of 29 ( English is our second language). Just 3 months later, working with Mr. David once a week the results were astonishing: English 35, Reading 34. All because of Mr. David’s detailed explanations and his unique approach. We cannot thank you enough Mr. David!

PERFECT ACT SCORE

David was an incredible and passionate teacher. When I first started taking practice tests, I was scoring around 34. However, after David’s tutoring, I received a 36 on my first attempt at the ACT. He knows exactly what to do for the ACT. His explanations were always incredibly clear, his homework always helped me in later exams, and I never felt like a minute was wasted in class. His noting taking strategy and tips were very helpful for reviewing, as I knew exactly what to review the day before the exam. Outside of the exam itself, he provided plenty of tips for mentally and physically preparing for both the test day and the days leading up to it. I cannot recommend him enough, as I would not have been able to do as well as I did without his great tutoring.

If you want a tutor to show you exactly how to tackle the Verbal with precise steps. Went from a 600 to a 740.

I worked with David for several months on the SAT English and Writing and Language sections. He was the exact tutor I was looking for when I was first starting my prep. He has created a method of approaching this part of the SAT that improved my score tremendously. He is the perfect tutor if you want someone who will show you and walk you through the exact steps you need to take to tackle all the questions on SAT Verbal. I am not and have never been a strong English person, yet through his help, I went from a 600 to a 740 (and was scoring 760s on practices). I went from getting 17 wrong on the reading comprehension to only 3 on real exam. He only uses the real tests, so all of his help was the exact material.

Patient and very experienced tutor

I had a previous science tutor who just explained the problems I got wrong with a focus on the content, but never taught me how to approach the questions. My official science score then was a 27. I'm really happy I found David after that because he provided so many resources and tips on how to do well on this unique section of the test. After working with him, my official science score went up five points to a 32. He was also really flexible with scheduling and lessons weren't boring at all. I can tell he has a lot of experience tutoring in this subject and if anyone I know ever needs ACT science help I'd definitely refer them to him.

Knowledgeable and patient Tutor

He is very good at what he does. His philosophy background and his subject command help him to differentiate the right from the wrong answers in s reading comprehension and explain them in an understandable manner.
