BACKGROUND:

I have over 20 years of experience teaching the ACT and SAT, both in classrooms and as a private tutor. My private test prep students have gained admission to highly selective universities, including schools in the Ivy League.

I took my first tutoring job over 20 years ago at Santa Monica College, where I received an award for excellence in tutoring writing, grammar, and literature. While attending UCLA, I worked as a teaching assistant for 6 semesters, leading review sessions and grading student essays. As a private business English coach, I worked with executives for companies such as Cathay Bank, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Walt Disney, UCLA Medical Center, and the PGA. I've also taught English at a private university and at the largest ESL school in Los Angeles, where I also served as academic director.

I've learned a lot about teaching since I first started, but my basic approach hasn't changed: my style is personable, highly interactive, and student-centered. I never subject my students to a judgmental attitude or boring lectures. In every session, I challenge my test prep students to carefully scrutinize their thought processes on real test questions and prompt them to apply the strategies and tactics critical for score improvement. My goal is always to help students feel confident, dig in to the test material, and start making measurable progress right away.

SAT & ACT TUTORING:

The key to standardized test improvement is practice that is both CONSISTENT and DELIBERATE. Practicing "deliberately" means focusing on specific strategies and tactic

A whopping 65% of the ACT English section tests a relatively small handful of grammar points. For an ACT tutor to help students increase their scores, the tutor must be intimately familiar with these grammar issues. Just as important, the tutor must be skilled in explaining and reinforcing the grammar in simple terms that students can quickly grasp and apply to the test. My 10 years experience teaching both test prep and ESL has enabled me not only to master the grammar, but also to become adept at breaking it down into small, easily digestible bites. (Before becoming a full-time test prep tutor, I taught ESL at Shepherd University, Santa Monica College, and Language Systems, International.) My ability to help students quickly identify the grammar problems presented on the ACT has produced outstanding results. For example, my most improved student on the December, 2015 ACT increased her ACT English score 5 points (from 25 to 30) after two months of weekly online tutoring with me. I have been teaching ACT reading and other standardized reading tests for over ten years, both as a self-employed private tutor and for a highly regarded test prep company. I also have ten years of experience teaching reading and vocabulary at schools such as Shepherd University and Language Systems, International. However, the results I help my students achieve are what truly qualify me as an ACT reading tutor. As just one example, my most improved student on the December, 2015 ACT increased her ACT reading score 7 points (from 20 to 27) after two months of weekly online tutoring with me. One reason my ACT reading students consistently achieve results is that I teach them how to leverage the design of the test. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an above-average knowledge of the ACT reading subject areas (prose fiction, social studies, humanities, and natural sciences) to do well on the test. I focus my ACT reading lessons on teaching students the specific types of responses the test actually rewards and how to produce those responses quickly and consistently.

I have over ten years of experience teaching the reading section of the SAT, both as a private tutor and classroom instructor. I have comprehensively researched the "new" SAT and have been tutoring it since the first practice tests were released in June of 2015. Before becoming a full-time test prep tutor, I taught English and ESL for over ten years at schools such as Shepherd University and Language Systems, International. I also tutored for several years in the English and ESL departments at Santa Monica College, where I received an award for excellence in tutoring writing, grammar, and literature. As an SAT reading tutor, I focus on leveraging test design and helping students retool their reading habits in a way that maximizes their ability to identify correct answers. This approach consistently produces results for my students, who regularly achieve significant gains in their scores. For example, my most-improved student on the October, 2015 SAT increased his score 200+ points after 6 weeks of online tutoring with me,

The Writing & Language portion of the redesigned SAT is similar to the ACT's English section. I have been tutoring this section of the exam since the first administration of the redesigned SAT in March, 2016. As a full-time test prep tutor focusing on the verbal sections of the ACT & SAT, I have analyzed this part of the test in-depth and have refined that analysis over the course of hundreds of tutoring sessions. Drawing on my own experience and the work of other test prep experts, I've put together a simple but powerful system for quickly increasing SAT Writing & Language scores.

Science

ACT Science

ACT Science

A common misconception about the ACT science section is that it is primarily a test of scientific knowledge. It is not. Rather, it is a language and logic quiz involving scientific content. You do not need an above average background in science to do well on this part of the test. If you can make sense of tables and graphs and learn to "deconstruct" the section's language games, you can do well on ACT science! I have 5+ years of experience tutoring ACT science. In that time, I've helped hundreds of students achieve above average score gains. I've done so by enabling them to see past the superficial complexity of the material. The passages and questions in the ACT science section often contain extraneous, highfalutin language that masks their true simplicity. I teach students to ignore the *noise* and get to the heart of the matter. The results speak for themselves!

ACT tutoring

I only had one session. We began with the concepts of English which he explained very well. If I could have afforded more sessions I would have. Good tutor and very knowledgeable.

Excellent ACT Science Tutor!

We are very grateful to David for helping our daughter raise her ACT Science score by 5 points, from a 26 to 31. The result speaks for itself. My daughter said he had a lot of practice tests to use and that was helpful. She often under-performs on standardized tests, compared to school grades, and David helped her overcome that.

One-of-a-kind Tutor!

My son and I feel very lucky to encounter such a knowledgeable, professional, and organized tutor. Every lesson with David included structure, strategies with action steps, and the technicalities of the SAT. David takes time to hear concerns and is also very observant. My 16-year-old son shared that because of David he has become a better writer. My son feels confident that he will do well on his SAT thanks to David's insight. We are very grateful for his expertise. Additionally, David is a good person who truly has a passion for helping students succeed. I am really touched by David as a teacher/coach and wish him all the success.

Well-planned SAT prep from experienced tutor

My daughter was waiting until last min to prepare August SAT this summer. She said she could study alone, but I did know she needed very specific guidance to get higher score. She got 700 from 1st SAT reading & writing and language sections. I worried she could get lower score. She needed at least 30 point more before school started. Time was running out. I knew teaching reading comprehension is very difficult task, raising score in 700 range was a challenge. I was going through this website, and I accidentally found David W., but read all his reviews. I found consistently Scores were improved. That convinced me David could find each students' learning style, weakness, and strategy to improve scores. That worked. One of the best decision I made against my daughter's choice. From the first tutoring session, David found weakness, identified areas to improve scores, and guided my daughter. He found repeated weakness, and focused on same area, not to make same mistakes. During 3 weeks, my daughter had 6 sessions in total, her score has improved 50 points, she got 750. That helped her to meet her goal. I like the idea of "sharing Google Doc", he could see my daughter's note taking during session, that made her more concentrated, sharing same notes helped my daughter and David for consistency in learning. That prevented "jumping from one area to another" from one session to another, that was quite common through on-line tutoring. Time-wise, and investment-wise, that was the right decision. We could move on next step for college preparation.

Great Tutor

David was very helpful in helping my son with test taking strategies in ACT Science. He took the ACT once and ran out time in Science and David was very specific in how to answer different types of questions.

Excellent tutor. You will love him.

He worked with my daughter on mainly ACT science. I wish I found him earlier. He is very nice and encouraging. He is good at explaining and she made huge improvements. We never found any tutor like him. We were skeptical about online tutors like others but he was a gem. You will love him. No regrets at all. Excellent, excellent choice. I never review anyone but I wanted to share that he is really really good tutor. He was the only successful tutor we found so far. Cannot say good enough about him.

Solid session

Good instructor. Still deciding whether to go with a tutor, but would definitely keep David at top of list going forward.

ACT Reading from a 21 to a 32

My daughter took the ACT for the first time in April without any prep and did pretty well on 3 parts (30, 28, 28) but not as well on the Reading section (21). Her main issue was time management as she ran out of time on the section. She sat for the ACT again in June, but this time, we used David for 4 lessons on the Reading section. His tips and techniques really helped her and she was able to increase her score to a 32! Thank you David for your help.
