About David

If you're serious about increasing ACT or SAT scores, you've come to the right place. I am a full-time ACT/SAT expert with a proven track record. I have helped hundreds of students increase SAT scores by as much as 200+ points and ACT scores by as much as 5+ points.

I invite you to visit the feedback section of my profile to see examples of the results I've been able to help my students achieve on the ACT and SAT.

BACKGROUND:

I have over 15 years of experience teaching the ACT and SAT, both in classrooms and as a private tutor. My private test prep students have gained admission to highly selective universities, including schools in the Ivy League.

I took my first tutoring job 15 years ago at Santa Monica College, where I received an award for excellence in tutoring writing, grammar, and literature. While attending UCLA, I worked as a teaching assistant for 6 semesters, leading review sessions and grading student essays. As a private business English coach, I've worked with executives for companies such as Cathay Bank, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Walt Disney, UCLA Medical Center, and the PGA. I've also taught English at a private university and at the largest ESL school in Los Angeles, where I also served as academic director.

I've learned a lot about teaching since I first started, but my basic approach hasn't changed: my style is personable, interactive, and student-centered. That means no boring lectures and no judgmental attitude. My goal is always to help students feel confident, get involved, and make measurable progress right away.

ACT/SAT TUTORING:

I help students master both the academic content of the exam and the strategies that exploit its design. Students need to understand not only the concepts being tested, but also the ways those concepts are presented, which are often idiosyncratic and difficult to interpret. Once that light bulb goes on, the test becomes less intimidating and thus more manageable. For example, in the reading section, students see that the test has a few tricks up its sleeve, such as "bait-and-switch" answer choices, which it repeatedly presents in predictable ways. In the English section, I teach students the relatively small handful of grammar rules frequently tested. Students are often surprised at how straightforward it can be to identify the answers that conform to those rules - all it takes is having a clear idea of what you're looking for, combined with consistent practice and feedback.

My students learn to prep smarter, making it possible to produce greater score gains in less time. The key is focusing on the test's content and design during a concentrated period of consistent learning, practice, and feedback.

Unfortunately, many students who come to me haven't been taught to prep smart for the ACT or SAT. Instead, they grind away on practice test after practice test, hoping that somehow the long hours will mystically transmute into higher scores. But such grinding often just reinforces the very habits that limit students' scores in the first place. The job of a good test prep tutor is to put an end to all of that waste and frustration.

My test prep students also learn:
*The single strategic key that unlocks the answer to every reading question on the ACT/SAT
*A no-nonsense, results-oriented approach to grammar that enables students to identify ACT/SAT grammar issues with lightning speed
*A 4-step technique that dramatically enhances students' ability to learn and retain vocabulary
*A unique method for reading passages that can significantly increase both speed and accuracy
*The true nature of the ACT science section (hint: it's not a science test in the traditional sense)

The bottom line is this: though the ACT/SAT may be one of the most important tests of a student's life, it doesn't have to be one of the hardest. That's not to say my approach is a test prep version of a get-rich-quick scheme. There is definitely work involved - but, it's focused, deliberate practice, not mere grinding.

OTHER EXPERIENCE:

While in law school, I interned in New York City's appellate law department. My work experience also includes stints in IBM's marketing division and working as an assistant to billionaire and philanthropist Eli Broad.

When not teaching, I enjoy playing music. I have logged thousands of hours as a professional drummer and studied music performance at both Musician's Institute and the Los Angeles Music Academy. I'm also a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences who has co-written songs featured in "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Five Aces" starring Charlie Sheen.

FAQ:
Q: How long will it take to increase my score?
A: As a general rule, I recommend a minimum of 6 tutoring sessions per section, assuming you're practicing every day in between for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Q: How long are the tutoring sessions?
A: I always aim for one hour. I don't like to cut things off in the middle of a question or explanation, so lessons sometimes go over by 5 or 10 minutes. In such cases, I just charge for the hour.

Q: How often will we meet?
A: I'm currently only accepting students who can commit to twice weekly tutoring. I've found that students do not practice consistently enough otherwise. My students are generally high achievers, so the problem isn't laziness. To the contrary, many students are over-scheduled. It's only natural to set aside prep for the sake of other priorities. However, as much as possible, this temptation must be avoided. In my experience, lack of consistency is the number one reason for sub-optimal gains. The students who achieve the greatest gains are invariably those who make prep a daily priority for 6 to 12 continuous weeks leading up to the exam.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

A whopping 65% of the ACT English section tests a relatively small handful of grammar points. For an ACT tutor to help students increase their scores, the tutor must be intimately familiar with these grammar issues. Just as important, the tutor must be skilled in explaining and reinforcing the grammar in simple terms that students can quickly grasp and apply to the test.

My 10 years experience teaching both test prep and ESL has enabled me not only to master the grammar, but also to become adept at breaking it down into small, easily digestible bites. (Before becoming a full-time test prep tutor, I taught ESL at Shepherd University, Santa Monica College, and Language Systems, International.)

My ability to help students quickly identify the grammar problems presented on the ACT has produced outstanding results. For example, my most improved student on the December, 2015 ACT increased her ACT English score 5 points (from 25 to 30) after two months of weekly online tutoring with me.

To find out more about how I can help you or your student crush ACT English, message me!

ACT Reading

I have been teaching ACT reading and other standardized reading tests for over ten years, both as a self-employed private tutor and for a highly regarded test prep company. I also have ten years of experience teaching reading and vocabulary at schools such as Shepherd University and Language Systems, International.

However, the results I help my students achieve are what truly qualify me as an ACT reading tutor. As just one example, my most improved student on the December, 2015 ACT increased her ACT reading score 7 points (from 20 to 27) after two months of weekly online tutoring with me.

One reason my ACT reading students consistently achieve results is that I teach them how to leverage the design of the test. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an above-average knowledge of the ACT reading subject areas (prose fiction, social studies, humanities, and natural sciences) to do well on the test. I focus my ACT reading lessons on teaching students the specific types of responses the test actually rewards and how to produce those responses quickly and consistently.

ACT Science

A common misconception about the ACT science section is that it is primarily a test of scientific knowledge. It is not. Rather, it is a language and logic quiz involving scientific content. You do not need an above average background in science to do well on this part of the test. If you can make sense of tables and graphs and learn to "deconstruct" the section's language games, you can do well on ACT science!

I have 5+ years of experience tutoring ACT science. In that time, I've helped hundreds of students achieve above average score gains. I've done so by enabling them to see past the superficial complexity of the material. The passages and questions in the ACT science section often contain extraneous, highfalutin language that masks their true simplicity. I teach students to ignore the *noise* and get to the heart of the matter. The results speak for themselves!

SAT Reading

I have over ten years of experience teaching the reading section of the SAT, both as a private tutor and classroom instructor. I have comprehensively researched the "new" SAT and have been tutoring it since the first practice tests were released in June of 2015.

Before becoming a full-time test prep tutor, I taught English and ESL for over ten years at schools such as Shepherd University and Language Systems, International. I also tutored for several years in the English and ESL departments at Santa Monica College, where I received an award for excellence in tutoring writing, grammar, and literature.

As an SAT reading tutor, I focus on leveraging test design and helping students retool their reading habits in a way that maximizes their ability to identify correct answers. This approach consistently produces results for my students, who regularly achieve significant gains in their scores. For example, my most-improved student on the October, 2015 SAT increased his score 200+ points after 6 weeks of online tutoring with me,

SAT Writing

The Writing & Language portion of the redesigned SAT is similar to the ACT's English section. I have been tutoring this section of the exam since the first administration of the redesigned SAT in March, 2016. As a full-time test prep tutor focusing on the verbal sections of the ACT & SAT, I have analyzed this part of the test in-depth and have refined that analysis over the course of hundreds of tutoring sessions. Drawing on my own experience and the work of other test prep experts, I've put together a simple but powerful system for quickly increasing SAT Writing & Language scores.

Outstanding Tutor - ACT composite went from 28 to 33

David is an OUTSTANDING tutor if you want serious prepping for the ACT. My son loved his methods of teaching from day one. Today we received my son's September ACT test scores and I am extremely pleased. The first time my son took the ACT back in April (totally unprepared), his scores in English, Reading and Science were, 27, 29, and 27 respectively. After engaging with David over the summer (
