About Kelly

I am a UC Irvine graduate with a BA in Psychology and Social Behavior. I have been lifeguarding for about ten years now and have CPR and First Aid certifications.
I have tutored privately, as a volunteer, and for a tutor academy. I have experience teaching small groups as well as one on one.
I am very well rounded and enjoy working with kids. I especially value the look they get when they finally understand something that had previously been seen as some puzzle in a foreign language.
I have the most experience with middle school and elementary children, but am very good with high schoolers one on one.
I have experience teaching and tutoring those with learning disabilities such as dyslexia and ADHD, as well as those individuals with intellectual disabilities such as autism.

I look forward to working with you and your child.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have experience tutoring those with ADHD and am very familiar with strategies and adaptations needed when working with those individuals, as I grew up with ADHD that hadn't been diagnosed.
I currently work at a tutoring academy and work one-on-one with several students who have learning disabilities and attention issues.

Algebra 1

I was in the honours math program all through high school.
I tutor children after school a couple days a week on their math homework or homework from their enrichment classes.
I have done private tutouring for Algebra I.

I am a UC Irvine graduate.

Aspergers

I have been around individuals with disabilities all my life - my mother's youngest brother has an intellectual disability and currently lives with me. I have volunteered with the Special Olympics for the past 15 years and am looking forward to my 16th this June. Lastly, I worked with a behaviour respite company and have experience interacting and managing individuals with severe autism.

Autism

I have volunteered with the Special Olympics for the past 15 years and am looking forward to my 16th this June. Lastly, I worked with a behaviour respite company and have experience interacting and managing individuals with severe autism.

Elementary (K-6th)

I tutour children at a tutouring facility that serves students K-8th grade. I assist mostly 2nd through 5th graders with their enrichment classes and assignments, and help all others with their homework from their individual grade schools.
I have done private tutouring for children in the 2nd grade up through 6th grade.
I have done tutouring with an SES program that worked with children K-12th.

English

I teach and tutor conversational English. I also tutor at an after school enrichment facility where I help with homework or enrichment work.
I have taught both private and company tutoring and both one-on-one and small groups.
I am excellent at organizing and study strategies.
I am easy to get along with, dedicated, and have my own vehicle.
I have a BA from UC Irvine.

ESL/ESOL

I teach conversational English to ESL students whose parents are visiting for the summer.
I have tutoured ESL students both privately and at a tutouring centre.
I taught Chinese and Japnese transfer students conversational English while at UCIrvine.
I grew up in the Monterey Park and Alhambra areas and am familiar with ESL students, and have friends who are available to assist with translating if need be.

Martial Arts

I am a second degree black belt in Taekwondo. I started when I was 8 years old and participated in many competitions and tournaments as well as attended many as a judge/volunteer from my school
I was also an instructor at a Taekwondo studio recently where I assisted with warm ups, sparring, and form perfection.
During high school I was in a martial arts club. The master taught mixed martial arts at his own studio but would work with us on campus or train with us in his backyard.
I was in a ninjutsu class in college.

Phonics

I grew up with Hooked on Phonics. My father made my sisters and I do it every day - even during the summer when he would make up his own "summer school" program and give us math, science, and English assignments from our next years textbooks.

In elementary school, high school, and even in college I was helping ESL students learn how to speak and write in English.

I am currently working with a tutoring company where I assist with students homework assignments or enrichment work. But during the summer I teach a Communicative English class to children whose families are visiting the states for the summer and want their kids engaged in something useful.

Reading

I teach and tutor at a facility with second through eighth graders. I often just help with their homework from school, but in summer I teach a conversational English class.
I have a lot of tutoring experience and a lot of experience with children.
I have certification in CPR and First Aid.

Special Needs

I have been around individuals with disabilities all my life - my mother's youngest brother has an intellectual disability and currently lives with me. I have volunteered with the Special Olympics for the past 15 years and am looking forward to my 16th this June. I am a certified lifeguard with experience teaching adaptive swim lessons.

Lastly, I worked with a behaviour respite company and have experience interacting and managing individuals with severe autism. I am also looking forward to being a volunteer with AbilityFirst in Pasadena this upcoming April.

Swimming

I have been a swimmer since I could walk. My parents had me enrolled in swimming classes every summer until I was too advanced for the rest of my peers. From there I joined the city team - The Alhambra Dolphins - and perfected my strokes and participated in competitions.

I was on the varsity Swim team in high school all four years, and on the varsity water polo team.
I assisted the swim coach for our city team once I stopped swimming with them.

I have been life guarding and teaching swim lessons for more than ten years now and am very familiar with all the strokes, drills, exercises, etc required for swimming. I have all necessary certification, including CPR, first aid, and WSI.
